We Simulated Renting Out 5 AI Rigs. One Loses Money.

14m | Nov 2, 2026

This is the audio version of a very visual film. Watch it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/3fzUOk6aZuQ

In 2026 graphics cards stopped losing value: a used RTX 3090 sells for about 97% of its 2020 launch price, an RTX 5090 for about three times its sticker, and NVIDIA's DGX Spark went from $3,999 to $6,950 in one year. So can the box on your desk pay rent? We look at what 'the price of compute' really is (four different rulers for one H100 hour), the two ways to sell compute from home (sell tokens through OpenRouter or Darkbloom, or rent out hours on Vast.ai, Salad or GPUwerk), and a Monte Carlo of five rigs, 200,000 possible months each, at Austrian household power prices. One of them loses money.

The simulation model, its inputs and what it leaves out are written out under the YouTube video.
