Yellow Rocking: What to Say When You Can't Go No-Contact
YELLOW ROCKING — what to say when going no-contact isn't an option.
You've probably heard of gray rocking: become boring, give nothing back, stop being interesting to engage with. It works beautifully right up until you can't use it.
Because sometimes you share children. Sometimes you work together. Sometimes it's your mother. Sometimes there's a business, a house, a divorce, a pet, an aging parent — and you can't just disappear.
That's what yellow rocking is for.
In Episode 331 of Secret Life Podcast, Brianne Davis breaks down a communication skill she wishes more people knew about: calm, brief, polite, boundaried contact that handles what has to be handled and gives away nothing else.
In this episode:
- Why you're not actually attached to the person anymore — you're attached to getting the resolution from them
- The trap: two hours arguing about something that happened three years ago
- Exact scripts for the texts that hook you, including the trigger → old response → yellow rock exercise she does with clients
- Why yellow rocking isn't emotionlessness — your heart can be pounding, you just regulate before you reply
- Why it isn't about beating anyone, because the second you're trying to win you're still playing
- The six characteristics: brief, neutral, polite, specific, boundaried, no emotional bait
You can communicate information without handing someone access to your entire emotional world.
And where this meets The Fantasy Loop™: sometimes you're not fantasizing about the relationship, you're fantasizing about the conversation that will finally fix everything. The one where you explain it perfectly and they finally understand. That conversation isn't coming — and healing is accepting that you don't need them to understand your reality in order to live in it.
A NOTE ON SAFETY: Yellow rocking is not a magic trick. If someone is physically violent, stalking you, threatening you, or escalating when you set a boundary, this is not something to experiment with. Changing your behavior inside an abusive relationship can provoke escalation. Get support and an actual safety plan first. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or thehotline.org.
