Virginity as a social construct

Today we are talking about the construct of virginity and how it works in favour of the patriarchy by commodifying women as something to be won or conquered and shaming men who haven’t slept with a woman yet. The idea of virginity as something women can ‘lose’ to or that can be ‘taken’ by men has proven to be a problematic concept beyond the physical myths, which takes the power away from women and denies the existence of non-heterosexual bodies and experiences.
