Season 10 | Episode 195

Episode 195 | Historical Events

In this History episode we focus on the Guatemalan syphilis experiments of 1946 to 1948 — when US Public Health Service doctors deliberately infected more than 1,300 Guatemalan soldiers, prisoners, psychiatric patients, and sex workers with syphilis, gonorrhea, and chancroid to test penicillin, classified the files, and kept the experiments secret for 62 years until a historian found them in a university archive.

The Nuremberg Code had just been written. The researchers knew it existed. They conducted the experiments anyway.
