THE WATTS RIOTS
Season 10 | Episode 197
23m | Sep 6, 2026Episode 197 | Historical Events
In this History episode we focus on the Watts Riots of August 1965 — six days of uprising in South Los Angeles triggered by a traffic stop, that left 34 dead, 1,032 injured, and $40 million in damage, and produced the McCone Commission report that identified unemployment, poor housing, inferior schools, and hostile police-community relations as the causes — most of whose recommendations were never implemented.
Thirty-four people died. The report said why it happened. The city moved on.
