He’s got to be the world’s expert on weirdos, so we start off by talking about whether anyone is actually normal. In terms of pushing up against YouTube’s boundaries without being suspended, Rusty’s done it better than anyone… but occasionally a few drinks tip the scales. And then there was the Sargento Cheese incident in which he got dinged for impersonating a cheese company, and a supposed threat by way of Red Dead Redemption 2. The current media landscape hypes up the fake destructivity of edgy content, and that fits nicely with Kevin’s video about scapegoat theory: The Invention of Blame. It’s a strange fit for something like comedy, which depends on context to a tremendous degree. Actual blame for bad things? Rusty’s gotten a bit of it, but it doesn’t seem real or serious -- like people saying they cut their fingers off because of his knife game video. He did have a surreal and harrowing moment when finding out that a school shooter had watched some of his videos, and that opens a debate about whether content creators harbor any responsibility at all for the things their audiences do. Would all of this be lessened if we just took away likes on social media? What’s actually happening to us when we watch Rusty’s videos, hear his songs, or read his tweets? It’s time to talk Requiem of the Crazies, the third volume of which is now up on IndieGoGo. We get some backstory about the characters’ inspirations, and if you haven’t read Volumes 1 and 2, you can do it for free at the IndieGoGo link above.
