[0:26] Grief, depression, and the pathway to mental wellness.All the while nourishing my soul with the music and poetry of the late, great, indie rock singer-songwriter, David Cloud Berman.How are you doing, motherfuckers?I am cold as all living fuck. I&#39;m recording this on Sunday.Yesterday was one of the coldest days I&#39;ve experienced. Taking the dogs out was absolutely brutal.Today, however, the sky is shining blue looking out my window right now.There are no clouds in the sky, but there is some sunshine that is warming it up and this cold streak is supposed to snap.And we&#39;re supposed to get up into the pluses this week above zero so there&#39;s that I find that weather is so is so important to the way I&#39;m feeling whether or not it&#39;s that I get outside more oreven just sitting here at my desk looking out the window into a blue sky rather than a gray ray, abyss, really, truly does help.I have been told I should be getting a mood light. [1:48] It&#39;s not something that I&#39;ve thought about very seriously.If you have experience with a mood light, shoot me an email, jd at mediumalchemist.com.I would love to hear about your experiences and if you think it made a difference.I am, other than cold, I&#39;m in a reasonably good place right now. [2:13] I do think that this drug, this new drug, lamotrigine, lamotrigine I believe it&#39;s called, is doing something.I don&#39;t know if it&#39;s doing enough, but it is doing something. I feel different.However, my eyes are leaking all over the place.Now, I don&#39;t know if this is related because there are fucking weird side effects with mental health drugs.Lots of stuff dealing with erections and ejaculate, quite frankly.And I don&#39;t mean to laugh if you&#39;ve experienced any of those things.I, years ago on Paxil, it took away my sex drive completely and I couldn&#39;t, you know, get it up as they say in the penis business. So there&#39;s that.I think that tomorrow I have therapy, and that&#39;s a good thing.It&#39;s been several weeks without talking to my therapist, Emma. [3:16] It was a decision I made early on in the month that I would see her toward the end of the month.I was doing okay.I was doing okay.You know. I mean, you listen to the episodes. episodes, I just thought I could swing it without her, and if it could save me a little bit of money, well, then that would be good too.Now, the funny thing is, I get all the money back. I have benefits, and they cover a good deal of therapy.They cover $5,000 in therapy for a year, so that almost gets me through the year, which is just tremendous to be able to swing that, even without working, um, is great.So there&#39;s that. I. [4:09] My hands are tucked up in my sleeves right now. That&#39;s how cold I am. My knees are knocking.I have a window, not a window air conditioner. It&#39;s a portable air conditioner and it&#39;s permanently set up in the window.So there are some nooks and crannies that are letting air in and I need to buy buy some filler, some of that foam filler and get that shit sealed up because otherwise it&#39;s, just too cold in here. [4:40] You know, I was thinking today, I was watching TikTok, believe it or not.I was looking at TikTok and one of the videos that came up was, I don&#39;t think it was Pearl Jam. I think it was just Eddie Vedder and his band, and they were covering The Cures, Just LikeHeaven.And it was so weird to see Eddie Vedder dancing about on the stage in a way that is very Eddie Vedder-like.Pearl Jam, I find, are a very serious band. Very, very serious.There&#39;s not a lot of jovialness in their music. music.Maybe Dirty Frank, you know, that might cut it.But to see him doing Just Like Heaven was really fabulous.It was really, really quite tremendous. I enjoyed it a lot.But more than that, it made me realize how much I love Just Like Heaven and how emo I am.Because the connection that I have to that song is very emotional and it&#39;s I, used to I used to think about it a lot when I thought about dating when I wasn&#39;t dating I used to think abouthaving a connection with somebody that that. [6:05] That I could sing about. And I don&#39;t think I&#39;ve settled.I don&#39;t think I&#39;ve settled one bit. I love my wife.But we have a very different relationship. We have a relationship that is not about singing.And obviously, there&#39;s a deep emotional connection, but it&#39;s just different.It&#39;s, she doesn&#39;t talk music, you know, with me.And it&#39;s one of the reasons why I enjoy this medium so much that I get to just sort of prattle on and sometimes you listen and sometimes you don&#39;t.I got a really lovely email, early last week and I can&#39;t and I won&#39;t read it on the air. [7:03] It&#39;s a little bit bit personal but it absolutely fucking made my week and there&#39;s something to that again the emo ness it made me cry i read it and it made me cry so if you&#39;re listeningand you&#39;re out on one of your hikes uh i hope you hear this and i hope you understand that i&#39;m talking about you and i want want to thank you for that email.As I mentioned, I won&#39;t read it on the air, but it was lovely.And if you ever do write me and you don&#39;t mind it being read on the air, then just say that in the email and I would be glad to read it on the air.I say on the air because, you know, I&#39;m a fucking broadcaster on the air over here.I feel like Lemmy today, my microphone is really up and, and I want to sing Ace of Spades, and I have a big mustache and crazy sideburns.No, but I feel like him because my neck is stretched upward to the microphone, hopefully to achieve better sound.And my voice is a little scratchy today. I think it&#39;s from the fucking cold.So there&#39;s that. that speaking of emo we&#39;re gonna listen to one of my favorite songs on american water um, 25th anniversary of this fucking spectacular record it&#39;s it&#39;s tough to believe uhbut uh this is this is the wild kindness and if you don&#39;t like this song i don&#39;t think we can be friends. [12:42] Don&#39;t step on it, J.D. Don&#39;t you fucking dare. You let that cymbal ring out.Yeah. Yeah, that&#39;s just a tremendous piece of work.Now, maybe it&#39;s because it&#39;s a more traditional song.There&#39;s verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, verse, out.Maybe that&#39;s why I find myself enjoying it so much.But I really got to say the combination of SM and David Berman vocally, it just works for me.I don&#39;t know how else to say it, but it just fucking works.It&#39;s so great. And it makes me so disappointed that this is the end of American Water.And we&#39;re going to have to wait a whole other record. The next record is great.Don&#39;t let me dissuade you from that. But there&#39;s no SM on it.And as I mentioned, there&#39;s something about the two of them together.That solo is really great. And that&#39;s an SM solo for sure. Track 3:[14:59] The hill out my window is still looking beautiful. It&#39;s effused in a kind of golden National Park light, and it seems to say, I&#39;m sorry the world could not possibly use another poemabout Orpheus, but I&#39;m available if you&#39;re not working on a self-portrait or anything. thing.I&#39;m watching my dogs have nightmares, twitching and whining on the office floor, and I try to imagine what beast has cornered him in the meadow where his dreams are set.I&#39;m just letting the day be what it is, a place for large numbers of things, to gather and interact, not even a place but an occasion, a reality for things. [15:39] I&#39;m just letting the day be what it is, a place for a large number of things, to gather and interact.Not even a place, but an occasion, a reality for real things.Friends warn me not to get too psychedelic or religious with this piece.They won&#39;t accept it if it&#39;s too psychedelic or religious.But these are valid topics, and I&#39;m the one with the dog twitching on the floor, possibly dreaming of me.That part of me would beat a dog for no good good reason. No reason that a dog could see.I&#39;m trying to get at something so simple that I have to talk plainly so the words don&#39;t disfigure it.And if it turns out that what I say is untrue, then at least let it be harmless, like a leaky boat in the reeds that is bothering no one. Track 2:[16:30] That was self-portrait at age 28 part five there&#39;s at least one more part left part six, i&#39;m not sure if there&#39;s any after that let me quickly take a peek here, there&#39;s part six and that&#39;s theend part six yeah and then we go into the third chapter of of actual error. [16:59] Somewhere in the middle, I will release the full version of Self-Portrait at Age 28.It&#39;ll come out after the sixth part is read. So there&#39;s that. [17:12] I think what we&#39;ve got here is something that is just marvelous.And I read an interview today on Instagram, and it was with SM, and they were asking him about Berman.It was secret knowledge of back roads uh is the instagram handle you should check it out um they had an interview with uh sm about david and connecting with him and sm expressedregret that he doesn&#39;t or didn&#39;t reach out more it was often when he had you know a question or something specific to ask david uh that he would reach out and then the next question wasis the song Forever 28 about self-portrait at age 28 and that really caught SM off guard he was like no I don&#39;t think so that doesn&#39;t ring a bell but Forever 28 was sort of a riff off the jeanstore Forever 21 um and uh yeah so it&#39;s funny where ideas come from where songs come from You know, they might come from a little phrase or just some sort of dribble-drab of words,and you hear it, and next thing you know, you&#39;ve got a song. [18:36] The poetry is more difficult for me to dissect. This is a long one, Self-Portrait at Age 28. [18:44] I don&#39;t know what Berman thinks of these poems.I don&#39;t know how long he took to write them. It&#39;s a shame he&#39;s not here for me to ask.I&#39;m convinced that if we could ask him some questions and if he knew that this podcast existed and that there was a cohort of people that listened to me fucking prattle on just so theycould hear a Berman song and a Berman poem, I think he&#39;d be pleased by that. I think he&#39;d be pleased by that.He always seemed surprised to know he had a fan base.And I won&#39;t say that I can&#39;t relate. [0:53] We are in the full effects of winter. There was a winter storm yesterday, which has put some snow on the ground finally.We had a green Christmas, and now there is snow, and this is what I have to look forward to for the next couple of months.Uh it&#39;s not something i relish i assure you of that uh i pretty much am not an outdoor person in the winter uh which is troubling because i need to be outdoors i need to get fresh air and ineed walks in and it&#39;s tough it&#39;s extra tough when fuckers don&#39;t shovel their walkways so that you can traverse the sidewalks you know in an orderly manner without walking aroundlooking as though you&#39;re having some sort of spastic uh reaction you know uh, it&#39;s it&#39;s a strange thing when you&#39;re about to fall the weird movements your body will make to maintainbalance it looks comical but uh oftentimes it&#39;s very frightening and uh. [2:03] I don&#39;t know, I&#39;m getting to the point age-wise where falling is not something I long for.I&#39;ve never broken a bone in my body.And I don&#39;t know, I&#39;m feeling pretty tough, but I think that if I were to break a bone these days, I would be an absolute wimp about it because I&#39;ve never experienced that pain.And I&#39;ve went off on a rant, haven&#39;t I? I&#39;ve went off on a tangent, all because people don&#39;t shovel their sidewalks.Just fucking get a shovel and shovel it, man.And if you&#39;ve got a little salt, put some salt down. But I&#39;ll tell you what, my dogs, they don&#39;t like the salt.It irritates the pads of their feet. So there&#39;s that. [2:51] Listen, I am in a bit of a funk. drunk, the new meds that I&#39;m on were enough to get me noticed by my wife and several of my friends.They noted, you seem different. You seem better than you have over the last little while.And I agree. I went to a party on Saturday night. I didn&#39;t get laid. I got in a fight.Uh-huh. It ain&#39;t no big thing. No, I&#39;m just joking. That&#39;s a little lead-up forward for you.But I did go to to a party on saturday night and it was a friend&#39;s party from high school days and call you know university days as well like we we maintained and we&#39;ve maintained afriendship despite my, efforts to fuck things up i didn&#39;t go to his wedding for example and that was a bit of a a bit of a. [3:49] Dent in in our friendship i&#39;ll be frank um but i sent him a long letter one day uh inviting him to my wedding when i got married and you know sort of explained my position at thetime which was that i was extremely poor uh there was a year there was a year that the government when i filed my income taxes the government followed up and they said you need toprovide a letter uh. [4:18] A written signed letter to confirm your earnings because your earnings are so low it was like $7,800 and that&#39;s when I was 29 I took the year I quit my job and went to performanceschool comedy school and then I spent the summer in LA cashed out all my life savings and spent that on summer in hollywood and um it all worked out rather well until i got home anddidn&#39;t have a job so you know it was it was my letter basically said that it was the goodwill of my friends that got me through you know and that&#39;s really truly the case i was very fortunatebut um Um, I digress as I always do on this podcast.I guess I should just call this podcast the digression project because that&#39;s essentially what it is.But anyway, the party was full of people that I didn&#39;t know.And I feel like I went in, even my wife made the comment the next day.She said, I, you know, I&#39;m shocked that you went because you typically bail on things things like that at the last minute. [5:34] Being social with people that I don&#39;t know very well, I&#39;m extremely in my head. And I wasn&#39;t.I was gregarious. I was joking.We had a good time. We watched some sports, drank some beers, and it was a lot of fun. I had a good time. [5:55] So put yourself out there. Risk is necessary. I got a new tattoo recently, and that&#39;s what it is.It says, risk is necessary, and it&#39;s a picture of a cow jumping over the moon.And it&#39;s to signify, I suppose, that anything is possible, as Kevin Garnett once said.So there&#39;s that. I will tell you that the last three days, though, I&#39;ve been in a funk.I&#39;ve been in a funk. And I don&#39;t know know whether I&#39;ve caught up with this medicine already?I just can&#39;t imagine that&#39;s the case. Or I&#39;m just in a bit of a funk weather-wise, seasonal affective disorder, you know, that sort of thing, and the drug just can&#39;t keep up with that.I truly don&#39;t know. I truly don&#39;t know, but it&#39;s a marked difference between. [6:47] Where I was and where I am.I&#39;m not having suicidal ideation. I&#39;m just low on a scale of 1 to 10 1 being very low 10 being extremely high, I&#39;ve been a 4 this week I track that and I&#39;ve been a 4 and that&#39;s no good. [7:08] Because 4s lead to 3s and, then it&#39;s just all I need to be in the 6 range I need to be I don&#39;t want to settle for 5s I&#39;ve been settling for fives for a long time, but I want to be in the six orseven range. I really, truly do.And then I can start to put my life back together.There&#39;s pieces all over the place. It&#39;s like a thousand-piece puzzle of a puddle. [7:37] It&#39;s just impossible to imagine what the end result looks like.And yet I have to. I have to put this shit together because without being together, I&#39;m going to fall apart, like completely.And that&#39;s just no good for anybody involved. So there&#39;s that. Yeah. [10:41] You gotta not step on that. It&#39;s fading out nice there. And you don&#39;t want to step on it because, well, you just don&#39;t.Because the artist wanted it to play that long, and I gotta respect that.I gotta respect the art, you know?You gotta fucking respect that art. Garfunkel.So, Honk, if you&#39;re lonely, what do you think? Send me a message.JD at MediaMalchemist.com would love to hear from you.I personally love this song but I love this record this record is just so damn good and part of that is the double vocals with Malk and Berman and they just sound great together it soundslike they&#39;re having fun it sounds jangly, it sounds loose it just sounds fun Even though that song is, you know, in theory, a sad song, I don&#39;t think of it as sad.There&#39;s an uplift to it. And it&#39;s punctuated, though, with that sound of the honking horn right at the end, indicating that, you know, Berman is lonely tonight.And that&#39;s no good for anybody. So there&#39;s that. [12:06] Let&#39;s get cracking with Self-Portrait at Age 28.This is, gosh, what is this, part three or part four? This is part four of Self-Portrait at Age 28 from the book, Actual Air, Berman&#39;s Collection of Poetry.So let&#39;s get right to that. Track 3:[12:25] There are things I&#39;ve given up on, like recording funny answering machine messages.It&#39;s part of growing older, and the human race as a group has matured along the same lines. It seems our comedy dates the quickest.If you laugh out loud at Shakespeare&#39;s jokes, I hope you won&#39;t be insulted if I say you&#39;re trying too hard.Even sketches from the original Saturday Night Live seem slow-witted and obvious now.It&#39;s just that our advances are irrepressible.Nowadays, little kids can&#39;t even set up lemonade stands.It makes people too self-conscious about the past, though try explaining that to a kid.I&#39;m not saying it should be this way. All this new technology will eventually give us new feelings that will never completely displace the old ones, leaving everyone feeling quite nervousand split in two.We will travel to Mars, even as folks on Earth are still ripping open potato chip bags with their teeth.Why? I don&#39;t have the time or intelligence to make all the connections, like my friend Gordon. Gordon, this is a true story, who, having grown up in Braintree, Massachusetts, had neverpictured a brain snagged in a tree until I brought it up.He&#39;d never broken the name down to its parts.By then, it was too late. He had moved to Coral Gables. Track 2:[13:48] That is Self-Portrait at Age 28, and that is part four.And it ends with a chuckle. I love the ending of that poem, that section of the poem. [14:05] Coral Gables and Braintree Massachusetts. I always have trouble saying Massachusetts.I&#39;m not sure if anybody else does. I also loved the idea that we&#39;re going to land on Mars while certain people on Earth are still ripping open potato chip bags with their teeth.It just shows how primitive we are and how far we can get, you know?A certain cohort of us, anyway. I don&#39;t know what that&#39;s going to look like.I rarely do. I&#39;m just not intelligent enough to articulate.Oh, man. So good. this is just another example of Berman being Berman and really, delivering the goods I think that this poem once we hear it all together and I will do that I&#39;ll stitch it alltogether at the end and put it out as a separate podcast on the feed, I think you&#39;re going to be real happy with it when you hear it all together but it&#39;s just too long to do in one episode I feel.So that&#39;s why I&#39;ve chosen to break it down.And it&#39;s also broken down into pieces in the book. So I think it only makes sense. [0:27] Grief, depression, and the pathway to mental wellness, all the while nourishing my soul with the music and poetry of the late indie rock singer-songwriter David Cloud Berman.So how you doing, motherfuckers? I am okay. I&#39;m okay.I&#39;m looking out my window right now and the sky is blue, which means I am not.It is cold and dreary, but the sky is fucking blue and the sun is shining and I will take that all the live long day. So there&#39;s that. [1:03] I have been continuing my path of wellness and things are ticky boo at the moment.Again, I&#39;m going to attribute this to the new drug that I&#39;m on.And one of these days I&#39;m going to have the pill bottle here so I can tell you what it is in case you want to know and you want to make some changes to your life. Have I got the drug foryou?I&#39;m fucking kidding. I would never sell pharmaceuticals on here.Although I would, you know, tell you what strain of weed I&#39;m smoking.And it&#39;s called Animal Face.And it&#39;s delicious.And from what I gather, it&#39;s nutritious as well. So there&#39;s that.I have been, uh, smoking fairly regularly, uh, after, you know, dabbling for the better part of a couple of years with edibles.I&#39;ve just was unable to kick the munchies with edibles with smoking.I seem to have found a pathway to no munchy land. And that&#39;s a good thing.I&#39;m dropping some LBs, and that&#39;s going to make me feel better, and hopefully that&#39;s going to get me out walking more.And then it&#39;s a circle of life kind of moment. [2:28] I&#39;m holding that fucking baby lion. It&#39;s Simba, I believe is his name.I&#39;m holding that baby lion out over the... Now, let&#39;s talk about this for a minute.If I had a child, I don&#39;t think I would hold it out over over a cliff like that.And I did have children. So I am speaking from experience.I would not hold it. You know, if there was a whole gathering of animals below, I would not have my young in peril like that.That just seems, well, my dog seems to agree with me as well. So there&#39;s that.At any rate, um, um. [3:07] Yeah, I&#39;ve been smoking quite a bit, but I haven&#39;t been drinking. And I&#39;m okay with that.The last couple times I drank, I only had like three or four drinks, and I was hung over.And I don&#39;t know if you know this about me, but I&#39;m a fucking bulldog. I can drink.I would put myself up against, well, somebody that can drink as much as me.I&#39;m not into competitions, especially where beverages are concerned.Concerned i i don&#39;t think that um it&#39;s something that you necessarily need to compete over now strongman i&#39;m you know if you can flip over a log and get get yourself a tire that you canflip over well then that&#39;s something you can prove to me but but drinking probably probably not i i think i think i&#39;m mostly pretty good at keeping up so there&#39;s that today we are going tocontinue our journey through the catalog of, David. [4:08] Berman and Silver Jews.We are on American Water, which just recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. [4:20] And I know Berman isn&#39;t alive to make this kind of stuff happen, but I really would have liked to have seen a reissue.Um i&#39;m not asking for much i&#39;m not asking for a box set or anything like that because i don&#39;t know what kind of ephemera there is out there or extra tracks or demo tracks or whatnot, butdrag city you missed out on an opportunity here to um to uh to showcase showcase this fucking spectacular record and mark my words this record is spectacular we&#39;re we&#39;re you knowonly partially through it but it is really really good i strongly recommend listening to it in album form rather than in podcast form where you have to listen to me drone on about the qualityof the songs and and whatnot it&#39;s it&#39;s it works really well together these songs work really well together that&#39;s what i&#39;m trying to say so there&#39;s that i uh, don&#39;t have a whole lot else to tellyou this week uh i&#39;m feeling good i&#39;m feeling fine. [5:37] Smoking herb and drinking wine and uh i know what i can tell you about as the calendar turned to 2024 this is my 50th year i&#39;m going to turn 50 this year july 24th 1974 was theyear i was born and july 24th 2024 is the year i will turn 50 the day i will turn 50 so we&#39;re starting to go through this process of my friends that are, you know, months older than me arestarting to go through it.And it&#39;s really interesting that for some people it&#39;s very bothersome and for others, it seems like just water off a duck&#39;s back.Uh, I tend to be in that latter camp.I really have have no shits to give about turning 50. I don&#39;t feel 50.Uh, I don&#39;t know that I even feel 40.So I&#39;m raging against that machine and, you know, fighting, fighting an uphill battle.I know, but my hair isn&#39;t even gray yet. Now my beard, when I let my facial hair grow, it&#39;s white.It&#39;s all, it&#39;s all white, but my hair, I don&#39;t even have gray streaks in it.And I don&#39;t, Somebody asked me recently if I dye my hair, and it&#39;s like, no, I don&#39;t fucking dye my hair.This is all natural, baby.Black like midnight. You know what I&#39;m saying? Over here, that&#39;s what I&#39;m saying.That&#39;s what I&#39;m talking about. Black as fucking midnight. [12:05] Don&#39;t step on it, you motherfucker. You will ruin it all.Now listen, this is as good a time as any for me to reiterate that a song that fades out goes on forever.This song doesn&#39;t necessarily fade out because it&#39;s got a hard stop.And so it doesn&#39;t go on forever. It just ended. So I need you to know that.I need you to know that the song is over and it&#39;s okay that I&#39;m talking now.It&#39;s okay great outro love the noodley guitar uh we get a lot of it you know played throughout malch is um adding some some lift i suppose to you know an otherwise repetitive uh verse. [13:00] And normally I might complain about that but because it&#39;s Berman and because we get the lyrics that we get you can&#39;t complain it&#39;s, you know it&#39;s another piece of work in hisoeuvre that is just very fucking good you know I can&#39;t I can&#39;t put too fine a point on it just how good, his lyrics are And impressive they are to me.As somebody who has dabbled in poetry, more than dabbled in poetry, and songwriting, lyric writing, I can tell you that he stands head and shoulders above many, many.I&#39;m going to say including Melk.Melk is a great songwriter. I think this is a Bob thought is that Bob has said before that he is so thrilled that he got to work with not only one of the greatest songwriters of all time, but oneof the greatest poets of all time in David Berman and Stephen Malcomus, respectively. So there&#39;s that.Now, what is this song about? It&#39;s called Buckingham Rabbit. It.It comes to a chorus at one point when the rent became whiskey. [14:29] And then the outro is really what stands out for me. I don&#39;t know why.I just really like the noodliness of it.The atmosphere that it creates throughout the noodling is wonderful, but I&#39;m repeating myself now. So I&#39;m going to stop while I&#39;m ahead and just say, this is a fantastic collection of wordsand music.And it&#39;s not my favorite song on the record, but it&#39;s very good.Collectively. Again, I think independent of the lyrics, I wouldn&#39;t be so big on the song.But judging the song as a whole, I will take it. So there&#39;s that. that.Let&#39;s read some poetry. This is Self-Portrait at Age 28, Part 3.It comes from David&#39;s book of poetry, Actual Air, and I&#39;m going to read that for you now. Track 3:[15:28] Today is the first day of Lent, and once again, I&#39;m not really sure what it is.How many more years will I let it pass before I take the trouble to ask someone?It reminds me of this morning when you were getting ready for work.I was sitting by the space heater, numbly watching you dress.And when you asked why I never wear a robe, I had so many good reasons.I didn&#39;t know where to begin.If you were cool in high school, you didn&#39;t ask too many questions.You could tell who&#39;s been to last night&#39;s big metal concert by the new t-shirts in the hallways.You didn&#39;t have to ask, and that&#39;s what cool was. The ability to to deduce, to know without asking, and the pressure to simulate coolness means not asking when you don&#39;t know, which iswhy kids grow up ever more stupid.A yearbook&#39;s end pages filled with promises to stay in touch stand as proof of the uselessness of a teenager&#39;s promise.Not like I&#39;m dying for a letter from a class stoner 10 years on, but do you remember the way the girls would call out, love you, conveniently leaving out the I, as if they didn&#39;t want tocommit to their own declaration?I agree that the I is a pretty heavy concept, and hope you won&#39;t get uncomfortable if I should go into some deeper stuff here. Track 2:[16:47] Very intriguing. Very intriguing. We&#39;re going to get some deeper stuff going.That was Self-Portrait at Age 28, Part 3 from the book Actual Air, David&#39;s Collection of Poetry.I highly encourage you to get this book. It&#39;s really great.And um if you don&#39;t get it well you can listen to my audio renderings of the poems as we uh go through them so there&#39;s that what did you think of uh part three for me it it&#39;s got thatnostalgicness about high school that i just find so heartwarming and so relatable um i think that That the opening where he&#39;s sitting by a space heater, numbly watching his partner getdressed, and then having a blase conversation, and that gets him wondering about high school and being cool and all that good stuff. [17:54] Yeah. High school and nostalgia are interesting things.They come at an interesting intersection in your life where the word I becomes something that you can just leave out.And you don&#39;t have to worry about it.Love you, David says, forgetting the I.And then so cleverly noting that the I is a heavy concept and giving us breadcrumbs into the next poem. him.I wish I understood the cool thing a little bit more, because to me, the only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you&#39;re uncool.That&#39;s what I have for you this week. [0:28] Grief, depression, and the pathway to mental wellness.All the while nourishing my soul with the music and art of late indie rock singer-songwriter David Berman.How the fuck are you doing, everybody?I am okay. Despite my recent disappearing act, in the midst of season two, I am a-okay.In fact, I went to visit my sister in British Columbia, and then I went and visited my friend Tim in Portland, and overall had just a wonderful time.Just a real wonderful time.And I made it back, and I thought, I need to get an episode out.So that&#39;s what I&#39;m doing.So there&#39;s that. I&#39;m looking out my window right now. It is gray.It is full-on winter. Here we are in the new year.It&#39;s January, and I think that... [1:36] I&#39;m experiencing the opposite of what I normally experience at this time of year. I&#39;m feeling pretty good.After several weeks of shittiness and not feeling great, I can tell you that I feel pretty good. And it&#39;s got to be this new drug I&#39;m on.It&#39;s got to be. uh it&#39;s concurrent with my getting this new drug that i am feeling the way i&#39;m feeling i had to titrate up from 25 to 100 because apparently it gives you a rash if you just startat 100 uh which is bananas but these drugs are bananas they truly are you know going in and lifting the hood on your brain and rewiring shit and uh yeah i don&#39;t know how how to feelabout that but it&#39;s working you know i&#39;m in the front seat and i&#39;m turning the car over and the engine is fucking starting it&#39;s fucking starting and this is great news for people who like greatnews news. So there&#39;s that. [2:51] I have begun work on the Pavement Top 50 podcast.So that&#39;s going to be Mondays. So because it&#39;s going to be Mondays and Fridays actually as well, I&#39;m shifting the Berman project to Wednesdays.So going forward, Berman will be out on Wednesdays and we&#39;ll go from there.We&#39;ll start today and we will go from there. I&#39;m sorry that I&#39;m always doing this kind of housekeeping.You know, it seems at this point that I should be more together, less of a fuck up. [3:32] You know, all that good stuff.But I&#39;m not. I am still the JD that is uncool and underqualified.And yet here I am doing what I&#39;m doing. So there&#39;s that.I can tell you that, you know, on my trip west, I went out on a shoestring and I just leapt.I just leapt and said, this is going to work out. This is going to somehow work out.And you know what? It fucking somehow worked out.I had just enough money to make it work.And I didn&#39;t go into debt to do this trip. So that&#39;s, you know, fucking great. Right.Because money is definitely, I&#39;m learning a big, big thing with me.A trigger, I suppose. Or a result.Maybe is a better way to put it. It&#39;s a result of me being triggered.I tend to try and spend my way out of things, my feelings, on ridiculous things, and things that will give me an instant dopamine hit. So... [4:53] You know, I get that rush of excitement and adrenaline and just that good feeling, you know, that really good feeling.Speaking of good feelings, I&#39;ve cut way down. [5:10] Well, December was a rough month.September and October, no, October and November, I cut way down.I think in November I had 30 drinks.In December I had 90, so I was up by 200%, which isn&#39;t great, but I feel like I&#39;ve got things under control.I feel like I&#39;ve got both hands on the wheel to keep the driving metaphor going.And that&#39;s good. that&#39;s a good feeling to feel in control of your you know fucking idiocies um and yeah i am i&#39;m feeling in control it&#39;s uh it&#39;s good now i i had to scrape the bottom to gethere i&#39;m not gonna lie to you i was really fucking low uh which is part of the reason why i didn&#39;t record but i&#39;ve been been told by several people, those are the episodes that you like thebest.Those are the ones where the raw and honest JD comes out and you get to hear, how I&#39;m dealing with things, and oftentimes you can relate to how I&#39;m dealing with things, so that&#39;s good.As opposed to me coming in and jumping through hoops and saying, oh my god, everything is fantastic, everything is great. ah. Track 3:[12:31] I can&#39;t remember being born, and no one else can remember it either, even the doctor who I met years later at a cocktail party.It&#39;s one of the little disappointments that makes you think about getting away, going to Holly Springs or Coral Gables, and taking a room on the square with a landlady whose hands arescored by disinfectant, telling the people you meet that you are from Alaska and listen to what they have to say about Alaska until you have learned much more about Alaska than you willever will about Holly Springs or Coral Gables.Sometimes I&#39;m buying a newspaper in a strange city and I think, I&#39;m about to learn what it&#39;s like to live here.Oftentimes there&#39;s a news item about the complaints of homeowners who live beside the airport and I realize that I read an article on this subject nearly once a year and always receive thesame image.I&#39;m in bed late at night in my house near the airport listening to the jets fly overhead. A strange wife is sleeping beside me.In my mind, the bedroom is an amalgamation of various cold medicine commercial sets. There is always a box of tissue on the nightstand.I know these reoccurring news articles are clues, flaws in the design, though I haven&#39;t figured out how to string them together yet.But I&#39;m noticing that the same people are dying over and over again.For instance, Minnie Pearl, who died this year for the fourth time in four years. jD has his whole day turned around!Transcript:0:22] Hey, it&#39;s JD here, back for another week of introspection and reflection on grief, depression, and the pathway to mental wellness, all the while nourishing my soul with the music andart of the late indie rock singer-songwriter David Berman.How the fuck are you, motherfuckers? That&#39;s the question of the day, isn&#39;t it? How are we?We take stock in the fall of how we are, And we put that through the rigors until we come up with a list of things we want to change about ourselves in the new year.And we use the calendar to achieve, you know, these goals.I don&#39;t know exactly where I&#39;m going with this, but be careful when you take stock. [1:17] The way you feel at the moment can influence or bias your outlook, and I know that the last few weeks I&#39;ve been, you know, in a pretty low place.Last week, notwithstanding, I think last week, felt markedly different and better, and I think that, um, this week is another notch up.I really do. Now, today, the day I&#39;m recording this, of course, I feel like a sack of shit, and I just want to crawl under my bed, but the days leading up to this, I&#39;ve, I&#39;ve felt reasonablyhuman.I managed to stay up past 7 p.m.Which is something that&#39;s been, you know, going on for the better part of two or three years now where I just crash.I crash at like 6.30, 7 o&#39;clock, 7.30. [2:23] And then I get up at 6.30. So I&#39;m sleeping, to quote Bell and Sebastian, I&#39;m sleeping the clock around, you know.It&#39;s troublesome.So there&#39;s that.Aside from staying awake a little longer, I&#39;ve just had a bit more pep in my step.I&#39;ve went for a couple walks the last consecutive days.Now today it&#39;s very cold out. I probably should try and go for a walk, but it&#39;s afternoon now and I don&#39;t do a whole lot in the afternoon.The afternoon is tough for me.It&#39;s sort of morning or bust and it&#39;s feeling like a bust at this point. [3:11] So, I don&#39;t know, but I got to toughen up because this is just the start of winter.And fuck, does winter ever suck.Oh, it&#39;s so dark and it&#39;s cold and it&#39;s wet on your feet and it&#39;s just miserable.It&#39;s the realization of melancholy, you know?It&#39;s the physical manifestation, rather, of melancholy.It&#39;s just ugh. And it does nothing for my, you know, my natural I&#39;m fucking totally okay disposition.So, there&#39;s that.But I ask again, how are you? How are you?I hope you&#39;re all right. [4:21] I&#39;ve got a couple real nice letters over the past couple of weeks.One of them, you know, came during a therapy session and it was so gratifying to think that not only are people out there listening to this, and participating in this, but that they would takethe effort and time to drop me a note. [4:52] It just means, it means so much. It&#39;s pretty fucking cool.Pretty fucking cool. [10:22] Don&#39;t step on it, motherfucker. What a fucking song.That should have been an indie rock hit.It&#39;s an anthem and it&#39;s just really spectacular and emblematic of what this record is all about.And the strength of this record is staggering. It&#39;s staggering.And so we get, send in the clouds.And I&#39;m grinning. This has turned my day around. [11:18] I&#39;m not like, I don&#39;t know. I don&#39;t even know. Suat-a-santra? What, does this phrase mean? As far as I can tell, researching, it&#39;s, and that&#39;s googling, really, and that&#39;s a cursoryGoogle, so if you want to do some more far-out research, please have at her.But as far as I can tell, it&#39;s gibberish, and Uh, it&#39;s not shocking.Um, but it comes from a phrase that isn&#39;t gibberish and it&#39;s soi de sainte, uh, and it&#39;s something like everyone.Something like that I don&#39;t know I&#39;m pretty fucking stoned so there&#39;s that I, love the atmospherics in between the chorus and the verses I think that that&#39;s really again something you canshake your head at and think goddamn this is not something that would have ever you know when you when you go back and listen to earlier works, Natural Britain. You just can&#39;timagine.You can&#39;t imagine that sort of atmospheric-ness. [12:45] And then you get the extended out. And what&#39;s not to love about that?When Malc comes in and does the Swatasantra on his own, why can&#39;t robots, why can&#39;t monsters get along with other monsters? when he does that on his own it&#39;s fucking just great.When him and David sing together it&#39;s glorious. It&#39;s truly, their voices work so well together.We got some classic Malcisms in there. There&#39;s the way he says, is it work?Let me look at the lyrics here for a second. [13:26] Game. I believe it&#39;s game. Whether I should be allowed in the game and he it&#39;s game in a really funny way.Very cool. Very cool.Yeah, this is a good song. This is a great song.I&#39;m gonna listen to it again while you&#39;re listening to a poem.Self-Portrait at 28 from the collection of poetry by David Berman, Actual Air.I know it&#39;s a bad title, But I&#39;m giving it to myself as a gift, on a day nearly cancelled by sunlight, when the entire hill is approaching the ideal of Virginia, brochured with goldenrod andloblolly, and I think, at least I have not woken up with a bloody knife in my hand.By then, having absently wandered 100 yards from the house while still seated in this chair with my eyes closed. [14:25] It is a certain hill, the one I imagine when I hear the word hill, and if the apocalypse turns out to be a worldwide nervous breakdown, if our five billion minds collapse at once, wellI&#39;d call that a surprise ending and this hill would still be beautiful, A place I wouldn&#39;t mind dying alone or with you. [14:48] I&#39;m trying to get at something and I want to talk very plainly to you so that we are both comforted by the honesty.You see, there is a window by my desk I stare out when I&#39;m stuck.Though the outdoors has rarely inspired me to write and I don&#39;t know why I keep staring at it.My childhood hasn&#39;t made good materials either, mostly being a mulch of white minutes, with a few standout moments, popping tar bubbles on the driveway in the summer, a certainamount of pride at school, every time they called it Our Son, and playing football when the only play was Go Out Long are what stands out now.If I squeeze for more information, I can remember old clock radios with flipping metal numbers and an entree called surf and turf.As a way of getting in touch with my origins, every night I set the alarm clock for the time I was born so that waking up becomes a historical reenactment.And the first thing I do is take a reading of the day and try to flow with it, like when you&#39;re riding a mechanical bull and you strain to learn the pattern quickly, so you don&#39;t inadvertentlyresist it. [16:09] That is part one of Self-Portrait at 28 by David Cloud Berman.There are a couple parts to this poem, so we&#39;ll go through this week over week and see how we end up, but that&#39;s what we&#39;re going to do.So there&#39;s that. So this is the first week that I recorded the poem separately. [16:37] I didn&#39;t go in chronological order of the actual podcast that you listen to, so just to explain how I was able to listen to that song while you were hearing the poem, now you know.Now you know, because I was just doing some editing.I was just dropping it in there, you know, as they say. [16:59] So something else came up. Well, first of all, let&#39;s just talk about this poem briefly because it&#39;s one of six parts.So I&#39;ll do what I did for the other poem and I&#39;ll stitch it all together at the end and you can get the whole thing for, you know, for a fact.I think it&#39;s a tremendous work. It&#39;s, you know, pretty deeply introspective.And at least I think, like if he&#39;s being straight up with us and not being, you know, a poet trying to write a poem. [17:51] That is somewhat elusive, then I think it&#39;s pretty straightforward. But that&#39;s art.Art is fucked that way, right? It can be straightforward, and then all of a sudden the artist can tell you no.And should an artist tell you no? I don&#39;t know. I think once the art is released to the world, it&#39;s everybody&#39;s personally.So there&#39;s that. There&#39;s some great turns of phrase in there. [0:58] And spread your beauty throughout the world. That would be my wish for you. So there&#39;s that.I am having a day.I just talked to my therapist, whom I haven&#39;t spoken with in about a month, just based on scheduling.She was taking a course and she was on vacation and then I was doing some things and it just made it difficult to sync our schedules together until today.I&#39;ll see her again next week.But it was a tough appointment because I am fucking low and I am overcome with dark thoughts about finding relief is ultimately where we settled.In an ideal world I find that in you know in this space, in this realm. [2:19] But when you feel this way, it makes you not necessarily think straight and practically.I mean, I&#39;ve got two little girls. They&#39;re 14 and they&#39;re 12.They&#39;re not so little anymore.But the collateral damage would be there.And I can&#39;t justify creating that sort of collateral damage just to feel relief.And so that&#39;s effectively off the table even though, there are days when I want it to be in the center of the table on a lazy Susan so that I can spin to win, grab what I need,and fucking rid myself of this mortal coil. [3:19] It&#39;s not good. It&#39;s not good.I&#39;m on a new drug, but I&#39;m ratcheting it up, starting out on a really quite low dose.Within three weeks, I&#39;ll be at the recommended dose.So that&#39;s good. But hopefully I get something from this relief -wise.I&#39;m also looking for a meaningful project, and this is a meaningful project.In fact, I just got an email from Corey, and it made my fucking day.It came during therapy, and I read it to my therapist even, because it&#39;s just, it&#39;s unbelievable that any of you would take the time to shoot me an email or. [4:12] A text or communicate with me on Facebook or Twitter or anything like that.Just to say, hey, hope you&#39;re doing okay. And what you do in creating these podcasts, it does matter.It does matter and it matters to me in the case of Corey or whomever else reaches out.That&#39;s so gratifying. That&#39;s so gratifying.I can&#39;t help but be dubious and think, okay, so who put you up to this, Corey?But that&#39;s just the way I am.That&#39;s how I am. I am naturally skeptical of positive feedback.It made it real tough when I was trying to perform, when I was trying to do comedy and act and perform.That was really tough.Cause you gotta take the good with the bad, right? You gotta take the good with the bad. [5:40] And if you can&#39;t, while then it can be crippling and it can be a challenge just to get out of bed. [5:59] I used to do a joke and the joke was, that I spend all my energy just trying not to wake up.It&#39;s fucking exhausting is what I&#39;m trying to say.I&#39;m going to keep fighting, but I&#39;m going to need some help. [6:33] And that&#39;s not a call for help from you, although if you can shoot me a letter at jdmeetingmalcomus .com, it would mean the world.But again, this is between me and fate.So there&#39;s that. [11:21] Don&#39;t step on it, fucker. All right.That was We Are Real from the American Water Record.Just a tremendous record overall.I found earlier this week there was a gentleman from Scandinavia somewhere and he had written a four -page essay on American water and I believe you can find ittranslated in English I haven&#39;t had a chance to track it down and read it yet, but it&#39;s probably worth reading.If you&#39;re looking for insight into the songs and the overall themes of the record, you know at this point that this is just not something we cover.I&#39;ll speak to what I know when I can, but this guy, David Berman, is over my fucking head.And, you know, a song like We Are Real, you take for granted because it&#39;s an album cut on just a fantastic record, but it belongs.It absolutely fucking belongs. It&#39;s very good. [13:18] This comes from Berman&#39;s book Actual Heir.The poem itself is called April 13th, 1865.Now I&#39;m no historian, but I can tell you that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated April 14th, 1865, and I&#39;m pretty sure that&#39;s what we&#39;re talking about here, so why don&#39;t wedig in?April 13th, 1865. At first the sound had no meaning.The shot came from the balcony, as if the play had sprung an annex, and I, John Sleeper Clark pictured stars through oak scaffolds as the news traveled over the chairscapelike a stain.In that dark room lit by gas jets the Welshman to my left conceded the armed rest we&#39;d been fighting over and doctors and half doctors flowed into the Scarlet Isles to help.I did not take to the image of a bay more waiting in the alley or a manhunt through Maryland.I remember standing up as the others did, and how the assassin was in mid -air when the stagehands wheeled out the clouds. [14:44] That&#39;s April 13th, 1865, over 150 years ago.158 years ago in seven months, to be exact. It was a Thursday.And it sure sounds like that&#39;s what it was about, but it&#39;s a day early, so, I&#39;m not 100 % sure what&#39;s going on.God, Americans have had a lot of presidents assassinated. There&#39;s only been, what, 41 presidents?40 something presidents, less than 45 for sure.And four of them have been assassinated. That&#39;s fucking crazy.Thoughts and prayers.
