Why Memory Foam Mattresses Feel Different After the First Few Weeks

8m | Sep 14, 2026

A brand-new memory foam mattress can create a confusing first impression. It may feel firmer than expected on the first night, respond more slowly than the mattress you replaced, or simply feel unfamiliar. A few weeks later, however, many sleepers notice that the surface seems easier to settle into and that their preferred sleeping position feels more natural.

The First Night Is Not Always the Best Test

Mattresses delivered in a box have been compressed for transportation. Once opened, they begin returning toward their intended dimensions and shape. SweetNight recommends allowing its mattresses time to expand fully after setup, with its current guidance suggesting up to 72 hours for complete expansion and dissipation of new-product odors.

The Break-In Period Is Usually Gradual

A new mattress does not normally transform overnight. Its feel develops through repeated use as the comfort materials experience normal compression and the sleeper becomes familiar with the new surface.

This is important when comparing the best memory foam mattress options. Immediate softness should not be the only measure of comfort. Support, pressure distribution, temperature, ease of movement, and how your body feels after several full nights matter much more than a few minutes of testing.

Week One Is Mostly About Something Feeling New

During the first week, the biggest difference may simply be unfamiliarity. Your old mattress had a specific shape, firmness level, and response that your sleeping habits adapted to over time.

A new memory foam mattress may support areas that previously sank more deeply. It might also contour around the shoulders or hips differently.

A Current Example of Layered Memory Foam Comfort

The SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam Mattress uses a 3D knitted CoolNest® cover, PCMflux high-resilience foam, gel-infused memory foam, adaptive comfort foam, transition foam, and a 5-zone support system. SweetNight describes the mattress as having a medium feel and offers 12-, 14-, and 16-inch profiles, with different levels of cooling and cushioning across those thicknesses. Its all-foam construction also emphasizes motion isolation, pressure relief, airflow, and stronger edge stability. Because these layers respond differently to pressure and body heat, the mattress is a useful example of why the complete feel of a memory foam bed is better evaluated over normal nightly use than during a few minutes immediately after unpacking.

Temperature Can Make Night-to-Night Feel Less Consistent

Memory foam does not respond exactly the same way under every condition. Since warmth makes it more flexible, changes in bedroom temperature can subtly affect how quickly the mattress conforms.

Your bedding adds another variable. Thick mattress protectors, heavy sheets, blankets, and toppers influence how much heat remains near the sleeping surface.

Modern memory foam mattresses may use gel-infused foam, open airflow structures, breathable covers, or phase-change materials to address temperature buildup. SweetNight's current memory foam collection, for example, includes CoolNest, CoolNest Pro, and CoolNest Ultra models built around different combinations of cooling and zoned support technologies.
