Episode 51: Something Wicked This Way Comes

Episode 51
2h 8m | Oct 13, 2026

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Spooky season is upon us, and our episode is rolling into Central Daylight Time at 3 AM in October just like an evil circus train. (That includes any listeners we might have who live in Illinois; Ray Bradbury would approve.) Something Wicked This Way Comes is one of the Kolars' favorite books and a worthy addition to Disney's Halloween canon, but it has very specific vibes that don't necessarily mesh with a band of heavily armed transients. How can Mr. Dark play a game of cat and mouse with people who know that magic exists and can also cast fireball? Topics discussed include:

  • Giving three of our four darklord qualities to Mr. Dark, who only has one of them as written but has it in SPADES;
  • Getting the PCs to play along with the carnival's games instead of going in with guns blazing;
  • Making the carousel a valid temptation in D&D terms, since there are very few PCs who want to be older or younger;
  • How Carnival, especially old Carnival, ripped off this book and movie lock, stock, and barrel;
  • And more!
