Edgar Allan Poe: The Last Word Nobody Can Explain | 5 Minute Strange

5m | Jul 19, 2026

On October third, eighteen forty-nine, Edgar Allan Poe was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore wearing clothes that were not his own. He had been missing for days. Nobody knew where he had been or what had happened to him. He died four days later in hospital, calling out repeatedly for someone named Reynolds. Nobody has ever established who Reynolds was.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the mysterious final days of one of America's greatest writers — the missing time between Richmond and Baltimore, the theory that he was the victim of election cooping gangs, and the deathbed name that has never been identified. Poe spent his career writing mysteries with perfect logical resolutions. His own death remains completely unresolved.

Subscribe to 5 Minute Strange for a new true story every weekday. One mystery. Five minutes. No explanation.
