Ambrose Bierce: The Writer Who Walked Into Mexico and Vanished | 5 Minute Strange

5m | Jul 23, 2026

In December nineteen thirteen, seventy-one-year-old Ambrose Bierce — one of the most famous writers in America — wrote a farewell letter to a friend and stepped across the border into revolutionary Mexico. He wrote: if you hear of my being stood up against a Mexican stone wall and shot to rags, please know that I think it a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down the cellar stairs. He was never heard from again. No body was ever found.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the final journey of the author of The Devil's Dictionary — his tour of Civil War battlefields where he had nearly died fifty years earlier, his decision to enter a country in the middle of a violent revolution, and the last confirmed letter that reads less like a goodbye and more like a man who had already decided. Whether Bierce planned his own disappearance or simply met the end he was looking for has never been determined.
