ENG-Wadabori-machi: A Short-Lived Town in Pre-WWII Tokyo

22m | Oct 29, 2026

The Wadahori-machi research dossier details the history of a short-lived municipality on the southwestern edge of pre-war Tokyo that existed as a town from 1926 until its absorption into Tokyo City's Suginami Ward in 1932. The sources illustrate that this locality functioned primarily as a metropolitan reserve ground, utilized by the central authority for essential infrastructure that could not be housed at the urban core. Key historical pillars include the ancient sacred terrace of Ōmiya Hachimangu, the Edo-period pilgrim route leading to Myōhōji, a shogunate-and-army gunpowder magazine, and the sprawling Wadahori Cemetery established after the 1923 earthquake. Furthermore, the dossier highlights how the area was shaped by modern waterworks and railways before the town's administrative identity was eventually erased. Ultimately, while the formal municipal name vanished, it continues to endure today through various local utilities, parks, and geographic markers.
