A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Austere Academy by Lemony Snicket

47m | Sep 14, 2026

Welcome to Offscript, the podcast where literature meets cinema. Each week, hosts Bri & Alli compare books to their movie adaptations — exploring what worked, what didn’t, and whether the book really was better than the movie. From timeless classics to today’s bestsellers, we break down characters, themes, and the creative choices that shape stories on page and screen.

🎬 This Week on Offscript: The Austere Academy

This week, Bri & Alli dive into The Austere Academy, comparing Lemony Snicket’s grim, darkly comedic novel with its visually striking, delightfully theatrical Netflix series adaptation. Set on the dismal grounds of Prufrock Preparatory School, the story follows the Baudelaire orphans as they navigate crab-infested living quarters, Vice Principal Nero’s screeching violin performances, and Count Olaf’s latest scheme fraught with terrible disguises, sinister agendas, and exhausting midnight running drills.

Synopsis:

The Baudelaire orphans are sent to a strict boarding school where they face harsh rules,

strange traditions, and two mysterious new classmates who may or may not be allies. As

Count Olaf continues to pursue them in disguise, the children uncover another layer of

his schemes while trying to survive the rigid and dangerous school environment. Amid

friendship, rivalry, and deception, they must stay alert to avoid falling into yet another

of Olaf’s traps.

Author: Lemony Snicket

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld

Screenplay Writer: Joe Tracz & Daniel Handler

📚🎬 Coming Up Next on Offscript: A Series of Unfortunate Events — The Ersatz Elevator

Next week, Bri & Alli head to the ridiculously trendy 667 Dark Avenue to examine Lemony Snicket’s dark, delightfully absurd The Ersatz Elevator and see how the Baudelaire orphans' sixth misadventure translates from page to screen.

They’ll follow Violet, Klaus, and Sunny as they are taken in by the obsessively fashion-conscious Esmé Squalor and Jerome Squalor, climb dozens of flights of stairs in a penthouse with no working elevators, and dodge the treacherous schemes of Count Olaf disguised as the pinstriped auctioneer, Gunther. Bri & Alli will dissect how the story’s signature gothic humor and wordplay evolve across adaptations—comparing the bleak, tightly paced novel to its stylized, multi-episode arc in the Netflix series. From the absurdity of high-society "in" trends like parsley soda and dark rooms to the suspense of the In Auction and the rescue effort down a empty elevator shaft, they’ll break down which version captures the true spirit of Snicket’s outrageously artificial world.
