They Still Argue After 26 Years—So Why Does Their Marriage Work? EP 116
What does a healthy marriage actually look like after 26 years?
Spoiler: apparently, you can STILL argue about lateness. 😂
Sharonda and Dwight Wear have been married for 26 years. They met at the University of Virginia, raised three children, built a life together, became empty nesters—and now they even run a business and podcast together.
But when Sharonda told me before our conversation:
“I don't know why we work.”
I knew this wasn't going to be another polished conversation about the “secrets” to a successful marriage.
So I decided to investigate. 👀
In this episode of The Secret Formula of Femininity, I sit down with the founders of Chocolate Rocket City for a funny, candid and surprisingly revealing look at what long-term healthy love can actually look like.
We start with my version of the Newlywed Game—except after 26 years of marriage—and their answers tell us A LOT.
Who apologizes first?
Who worries more?
Who initiates the difficult conversations?
Who needs space after conflict?
Who's more spontaneous?
And who is more stubborn? 👀😂
Then we go deeper.
Sharonda and Dwight talk candidly about recurring disagreements, different emotional styles, therapy, boundaries, affection, trust, acceptance, parenting, becoming empty nesters, entrepreneurship, shared values and what they've learned after more than two decades together.
We also explore something I talk about often as a psychologist: healthy relationships are not relationships without conflict.
Some differences may never completely disappear.
One of my biggest takeaways?
Compatibility isn't the absence of difference. It's the ability to remain connected while being different.
And maybe the goal of a healthy relationship isn't to eventually eliminate every disagreement.
Maybe it's creating enough trust and safety that disagreement doesn't automatically threaten your sense of “us.”
