The death of 18-year-old college football player Nolan Wells remains disputed after a Mississippi grand jury declined to recommend criminal charges in September 2026. Wells disappeared during a July 4 trip to Horn Island with friends and was found dead in the water two days later.

The grand jury found no credible evidence of foul play or racial motivation and said the circumstances were consistent with drowning. However, both the state medical examiner and an independent forensic pathologist retained by Nolan's family classified his cause and manner of death as undetermined.

Attorney Ben Crump and Nolan's family are now challenging unanswered questions surrounding blunt-force injuries documented on his head and body, his missing timeline on Horn Island, and how he ultimately entered the water. They are calling for the investigation to continue.
