The First Battle We Can Actually Reconstruct: Egypt vs. Canaan, 1458 BC

21m | Sep 10, 2026

More than 3,400 years ago, two armies met at Megiddo—and unlike many battles from the ancient world, we actually have a surprisingly detailed record of what happened.

Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III marched into Canaan to crush a coalition of rebellious city-states led by the king of Kadesh. What followed became one of the earliest battles in history that we can reconstruct from surviving records.

There was a risky march through a narrow mountain pass, a surprise attack, a battlefield victory, and then a siege that lasted for months.

So what really happened at Megiddo? Why did Thutmose III choose such a dangerous route? And how did this battle help turn Egypt into a dominant power in the ancient Near East?

Over 3,000 years later, the battlefield is gone—but the story of Megiddo survived.
