JAMA October 2026 Out-of-Pocket Costs for Chronic Illness Management in High-Deductible Health Plans

1m | Oct 13, 2026

A recent retrospective study examined out-of-pocket expenses for working-age adults managing common chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Researchers analyzed national commercial insurance claims from 2022 to 2023 to compare financial burdens between high-deductible health plans and traditional coverage. The findings revealed that patients enrolled in high-deductible policiesfaced annual costs that were roughly 1.6 to 2.4 times greater when seeking standard, evidence-based treatments. Despite this proportional increase, the actual monetary difference remained relatively modest, ranging between roughly $64 and $86 per year. Ultimately, this research offers valuable insight into the financial challenges chronically ill patients navigate depending on their specific insurance structure.
