A tremendous main event performance by David Benavidez for the Showtime/PBC pay per view fight card leads our latest edition of the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap Podcast."
Host T.J. Rives and insider Dan Rafael of BigFightWeekend.com are back to talk Benavidez punishing Caleb Plant in the late stages of their 168 lb. showdown in Las Vegas. Why did he take the bout over at the midway point? What was up with referee Kenny Bayless and most importantly, what does Dan think on a possible Benavidez bout with Canelo for later in 2023?
Dan also breaks down the controversial Chris Colbert-Jose Valenzuela undercard bout that seemed to be a decision robbery against Valenzuela in the 10 rounder. This is especially when Valenzuela dropped and badly hurt Colbert in the first round and hurt him on three or four other occasions in the bout.
Dan also recaps the rest of the Benavidez-Plant undercard and the guys spend a few minutes talking about the heart warming/awful situation with Cody Crowley and the suicide of his father within the last year. Crowley handled it well enough to beat Abel Ramos on the ppv card.

Plus, Saturday night's Subriel Matias TKO win for the IBF 140 lb. world title in Minnesota and more! It's the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap" Podcast.
First up, the guys discuss Matias beating Jeremias Ponce in a tough 5 round battle to become a junior welterweight world champ. Did Ponce punch himself out early? What's Matias' short term future at 19-1 with 19 KOs? Dan gives his insight. He also has more on the undercard with Jamal "Shango" James and Elvis Rodriguez winning.
Then, the guys get to the most prominent bout of the weekend and that was the cruiserweight main event for Queensberry Promotions and MVP Promotions as Tommy Fury, the half brother of WBC heavyweight champ Tommy Fury, defeated Jake Paul by eight round split decision. How did Fury get it done and how humbling is this for Paul, who had been on a real momentum roll for the last two years building his name as a boxer at the lower level.
On the undercard, Badou Jack became a three division world champ with a dominant showing over WBC cruiserweight champ "Junior" Makabu in a 12th round TKO. At 39 Jack deserves a tremendous amount of credit, but Dan says to "hold up" on the talk of him being a hall of fame fighter.

Host T.J. Rives returns with insider Dan Rafael of BigFightWeekend.com to go over it all.
The guys discuss first the IBF junior welterweight world title bout between Subriel Matias and Jermias Ponce on Showtime Saturday night from frigid Minnesota. Dan has thoughts on the match and whether we'll see some serious early punches unloaded in this one? Matias has 18 KOs in his 18 wins but Ponce is arguably his toughest opponent to date at 30-0.
Next, it's the social media enhanced battle between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury in an eight round cruiserweight battle in Saudi Arabia on PPV. The fighters met the media Thursday and T.J. and Dan have the latest on that and the fight itself. How much respect must we give Jake Paul, if he wins or will the half brother of Tyson Fury pull the upset to derail Paul's plans and momentum in the ring?
There's fight news to go over, as well, including Conor Benn's latest excuse for his positive drug test last year that still has him sidelined. Next up, was Lara's TKO in the 7th round of Britain's Leigh Wood to capture the WBA Featherweight world title in Nottingham, England. Lara used a booming left to earn the stoppage, but was it too soon for Wood's corner to call it off. The guys have good debate with examples pro and con for letting a fight go on.

A couple of wild championship fights kicked off February as Emanuel Navarrete became a champion in a third weight division and Amanda Serrano became the women's undisputed featherweight champ. And, we're ready to go over it all on the latest "Fight Freaks Unite Recap" podcast.
Host T.J. Rives and insider Dan Rafael of BigFightWeekend.com return with their insight and analysis, plus, some news off the weekend and a little nostalgia off the weekend too.
First the guys discuss Serrano's bloody win by decision over Erika Cruz Saturday night at the Hulu Theater next to Madison Square Garden. Dan and T.J. have thoughts on the battle and whether the fight should have been stopped due to the blood loss for Cruz and the fact she was clearly hopelessly behind on the cards for the 9th and 10th rounds? Also, Serrano will now meet women's lightweight champ Katie Taylor in a rematch in May. The boys have more on that and the rest of the Matchroom Boxing card that saw Alycia Baumgardner become undisputed at women's junior lightweight and Richardson Hitchins score a lopsided win that should have been halted earlier.
Next, the guys go over the thrilling, early "fight of the year" candidate as Navarrete got off the canvas for the first time in his career to rally and beat a valiant Aussie fighter Liam Wilson by TKO. Wilson score a knockdown in the fourth round and had the Mexican in serous trouble, but controversy happened with the referee delaying the restarting of the fight after his 8 count. That delay clearly cost Wilson a good chance to finish a stunned Navarrete immediately. Then, Navarrete showed great fortitude and out-slugged Wilson for his ninth title fight win in the last 11 bouts by KO.
They also go over the rest of the Top Rank Arizona card, including Arnold Barboza and former Olympic Silver Medalist Richard Torrez winning their bouts.
There is some news of the week and then, some anniversaries of Oscar De La Hoya's 50th birthday, Sugar Ray Leonard's pro debut and "the Raging Bull" beating the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson more than half a century ago.

Next, Dan's convo with Edgar Berlanga. The unbeaten Puerto Rican born super middleweight has severed his ties to Top Rank Boxing and is now a promotional free agent? Will he end up with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions or maybe Matchroom or Premier Boxing Champions?
Finally, there's news of the week, including British heavyweight Joe Joyce's April return in a WBO interim title bout and more. And, Dan gets nostalgic on the Friday anniversary of HBO's "Boxing After Dark" series from 1996.

Unified Light Heavyweight champ Artur Beterbiev retained his title with another KO in a title fight. This time an eighth rounder of Britain's Anthony Yarde to keep his IBF/WBC/WBO titles in London Saturday night. And we're ready to go over that fight, plus the Golden Boy Boxing main event win by welterweight contender Alexis Rocha on the newest "Fight Freaks Unite Recap" podcast.
Host T.J. Rives is back with insider Dan Rafael of his "Fight Freaks Unite" substack and BigFightWeekend.com and the guys give their insight and takes on all the action.
Why was Beterbiev able to get his 19th pro win all by KOs? How much credit should Yarde be given for taking big shots and firing back? Plus, what about the hideous undercard fights that Queensberry Promotions put on just before Beterbiev vs. Yarde? The guys have some STRONG thoughts on that too!
Then, what's next for the 25 year old Rocha and whether WBO world champ Terence Crawford might do a deal with Golden Boy Promotions to fight him later this Spring, etc.? Dan has thoughts on that and how realistic it is for a Crawford-Rocha bout or another Golden Boy fighter, Vergil Ortiz, might get the shot.
The guys also reminisce about the first loss ever in the career of legend Julio Cesar Chavez at 89-0-1 at the time, when Frankie "The Surgeon" Randall stunned him 29 years ago in January 1994. Dan has some insight and he and T.J. talk the magnitude of the win and what happened next nearly 30 years ago.
