You Were Never Supposed to Be Good at Everything
17m | Oct 15, 2026Somewhere along the way, you learned to worry about the C on your report card and skip past the A’s. Leaders carry that habit into how they handle their weaknesses and how they build their teams.
In this solo episode, Dr. Gary McGrath, founder of Statarius and creator of the LeaderStep7 leadership development program, covers Step 3 of the Seven Steps of Intentional Leadership: Strengths, including its three parts of strengths, limitations and grit.
Dr. Gary explains why leaders undervalue their real talents: the things they do best feel easy, so they dismiss them. He shares how a gift for visualizing physics equations and a weak memory steered his own career toward engineering, and why he relies on his team for the details he misses. Using the four domains of Strengths-Based Leadership, he shows how team building, problem-solving and decision-making improve when each person works from their strengths.
Limitations tend to surface when capable people are promoted or moved into roles that don’t fit. A project manager who excelled on two or three projects fell behind when handed a fourth, and a brilliant analyst struggled with decision-making once moved into management. A top inside salesperson had a similar experience in outside sales before finding her place in account management. Dr. Gary’s own limitation was speed: he made decisions quickly on partial data, and learned to keep an analytical voice on his staff to slow him down.
This episode is for new managers and rising executives who want to build stronger teams by playing to each person’s strengths, starting with their own.
