Kelly Ann Bates

This week we're discussing the heartbreaking case of Kelly Anne Bates, a bright and caring teenager whose life became entangled with one of the most dangerous men imaginable.

When Kelly began a relationship with a man more than twice her age, many people around her were concerned. Over time, those concerns grew as signs of control, isolation, and abuse became increasingly difficult to ignore. Tragically, the violence escalated behind closed doors until it culminated in one of the most disturbing domestic homicide cases in modern British criminal history.

This case is often remembered for the horrific injuries Kelly suffered, but as always, our focus is on Kelly herself—who she was, the people who loved her, and the warning signs that can help us better understand coercive control and escalating abuse.
