Mark Chapter 5: Bible Study by Atheists
Jesus gets out of the damn boat, and Mark Chapter 5 immediately goes completely off the rails. A man living among the tombs is supposedly possessed by so many demons that they collectively introduce themselves as “Legion.” Jesus casts them out, gives them permission to invade a nearby herd of roughly 2,000 pigs, and the entire herd promptly charges into the lake and drowns. The formerly possessed man is suddenly fine, the locals are terrified, and somehow Jesus is the guy they ask to leave. Maybe killing 2,000 pigs is bad for the local economy? We have questions.
Things get even stranger when Jesus crosses the lake AGAIN and meets Jairus, whose daughter is dying. On the way to help her, Jesus gets interrupted by a woman who has been bleeding for twelve years. She touches his cloak, gets instantly healed, and Jesus somehow notices that magical Jesus-power has leaked out of him, but apparently doesn't know who touched him. This launches us into a discussion about women's healthcare, erectile dysfunction research, and the rather enormous difference between having “faith” today and having faith while watching a guy supposedly heal people, command demons, and control the weather right in front of you. If those miracles actually happened as described, exactly how much faith would anybody really need?
Meanwhile, Jairus's daughter dies. Jesus arrives, announces that she's merely “asleep,” kicks almost everybody out, takes her hand, and tells her to get up. She does. Naturally, after performing what looks suspiciously like a resurrection, Jesus gives everyone strict orders not to tell anybody... which is especially weird considering he just told the formerly demon-possessed guy to go tell everybody what happened. Then Mark closes this miraculous resurrection story with one extremely important instruction: give the girl something to eat. Clearly there's only one reasonable conclusion: Jesus didn't resurrect her. He made a zombie. Keep that kid fed, Jairus. We've seen enough movies to know how this ends.
