Mark Chapter 3: Bible Study by Atheists

Season 43 | Episode 4
24m | Sep 26, 2026

Mark 3 opens with Jesus healing a man’s shriveled hand on the Sabbath, which apparently is a capital offense when you’re surrounded by religious rule-enforcers who think picking up sticks deserves death, but miracle-working gets a special theological loophole. The Pharisees respond to a supposed public healing by immediately plotting murder, because nothing says “holy law” quite like homicidal outrage over the calendar.

Then Mark gives Jesus a crowd-control boat, a pack of demons who cannot keep a secret, and his freshly assembled Funky Bunch of twelve disciples, complete with the “Sons of Thunder,” Judas Iscariot, and some noticeably inconsistent apostle-list bookkeeping compared with Matthew. Husband and Wife also unpack the Beelzebub accusation, the “a house divided cannot stand” speech, and the conveniently terrifying eternal sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

The chapter closes with Jesus brushing off his mother and brothers in favor of whoever follows God’s will. So much for sweet, gentle Buddy Jesus... this version is angry, politically disruptive, wildly inconsistent with the Old Testament rules, and apparently fine with turning family into a theological afterthought. If you like what you heard, or hated it in exactly the right way, support our blasphemy and come hang out with the heathens.
