This research investigates how adolescents who have lived with HIV since birth navigate the complex emotional landscape of sharing their diagnosis within personal relationships. By analyzing qualitative data from a clinical trial in South Africa, the study explores a multi-stage decision-making process that involves evaluating the trustworthiness of others and carefully managing how much information to reveal. The findings highlight that these young people often use strategic vulnerability to seek social support while protecting themselves from the potential harm of stigma. Ultimately, the authors argue that counselling protocols must evolve to better support the diverse and non-linear ways youth manage their privacy and connections in a medical context.
