  • 074. Frank McKinney | From Rich to Enriched: Success in the Business of Life

How does the integration of philanthropy and capitalism redefine the traditional concept of success and giving?

This episode features Frank McKinney, a real estate entrepreneur and philanthropist. McKinney shares his journey from humble beginnings in Indiana to becoming a successful real estate developer, selling some of the most expensive houses in the world. He emphasizes the importance of philanthropy in his life. He discusses the concept of "philanthrocapitalism," which involves combining the best aspects of philanthropy and capitalism to create sustainable solutions to poverty, and through this approach, he has built self-sustaining villages in Haiti. His story illustrates how success in business, coupled with a commitment to philanthropy, can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Listen to this inspiring conversation as Frank shares how you can start giving small and make a big impact.

[00:00 - 08:40] Becoming the Person You Want to Be

    • Frank’s humble beginnings in Indiana, combined with his early challenges, underscore his resilience and determination to achieve success against the odds
    • Despite a lack of formal education and a challenging start in life, Frank’s tenacity and hard work led him to a prosperous career in luxury real estate development

    [08:41 - 24:10] Philanthrocapitalism: Giving Beyond Charity

    • Frank breaks down the concept of philanthrocapitalism, which combines the heart of philanthropy with the efficiency of capitalism to create sustainable solutions for poverty
    • Reflecting on his journey from a troubled past to finding his professional and spiritual callings, he emphasizes the importance of finding purpose beyond material success
    • He argues that mere charity exacerbates poverty, advocating for sustainable projects like building self-sufficient villages in Haiti as a more effective approach
    • He also highlights the importance of measuring the impact of donations, focusing on how far each dollar goes in creating lasting change
    • Integrating philanthropic efforts into business models and stresses that giving is a fundamental part of professional success

    [24:11 - 32:59] Aspiring to Enrich Lives

    • Frank introduces his book, Aspire, and focuses on how we can move from the conventional definition of being rich, which is often fleeting, to being enriched, where one's impact extends beyond material wealth
    • He also talks about what’s next for him and his business

    [33:00 - 50:29] Small Acts, Big Impact

    • Frank underscores the importance of recognizing and appreciating the often-invisible people in society, such as custodians and short-order cooks, as a way of practicing everyday kindness and generosity
    • He challenges the notion that happiness comes from external sources, advocating that true joy is a result of being a responsible steward of one's blessings, especially in helping those less fortunate
    • His philosophy on giving and happiness suggests that small, consistent acts of kindness can have a significant impact, both on the giver and the receiver

    Tweetable Quotes:

“Exercise your risk tolerance like a muscle. Eventually, it will become stronger and able to withstand greater pressure.”

“You marry philanthropy and capitalism together, then you can solve poverty.”

“If I can succeed in the business of real estate, that's meaningless unless I succeed in the business of life. And part of succeeding in the business of life is sharing your blessings with those less fortunate.”

  • 068. Bob Burg | Success Through Giving: The Go-Giver Way

Do you think focusing on what you can give, rather than what you can get, is a viable path to business success?

Bob Burg, co-author of the international best-selling series The Go-Giver, joins us in this episode to talk about how giving can lead not only to personal fulfillment but also to profitability. When you focus on meeting the needs and wants of others, you'll find that your own prosperity naturally follows. He draws a clear distinction between being a Go-Giver, someone who adds value to others, and a Go-Taker, who places self-interest above all else. Bob provides practical, actionable advice that you can put into practice today to ensure your customers feel like a top priority, that it’s not about you, it’s about them. Tune in and begin your Go-Giver journey now!

    [00:00 - 06:04] What Makes a Go-Giver

    • Bob shares the story behind their book, The Go-Giver
    • A Go-Giver takes the focus off of themselves and places it on serving others
    • When you prioritize others, they feel good about you, like you, trust you, and want to be in a relationship with you, which leads to business opportunities and referrals

[06:05 - 20:24] The Go-Giver Advantage: Success in Business and Beyond

    • Giving vs. Giving Back: The term 'giving back' comes from a place of scarcity
    • If you've delivered valuable products or services that people willingly paid for, then you haven't taken from anyone, and there's no need to give back
    • Givers can be naturally born or developed through teaching and experience
    • The opposite of a Go-Giver is a Go-Taker, who prioritizes taking without giving in return
    • A Go-Giver salesperson actively listens to the customer's needs, wants, desires, challenges, fears, and hopes
    • Go-Givers are more likely to achieve success because they gain trust by putting others' interests above their own

    [20:25 - 30:26] Practical Ways to Become a Go-Giver Now

    • Keep the focus on the other person in conversations; make it about them
    • Asking simple and non-invasive questions, such as how they got started in their profession, can be a great starting point
    • Become a connector by helping individuals meet each other; this costs nothing and adds tremendous value
    • Giving and receiving are not opposites but two sides of the same coin, but giving should always come first
    • When you create an environment where people feel valued, you build influence

    [30:27 - 37:46] The Joy of Giving

    • Bob recognizes the impact of our actions on others, even when we may not be aware of it
    • Money can open doors to happiness, but it's not the key to being happy

    Tweetable Quotes:

“If business is done right, everyone profits along the way.”

“When we're looking to touch the lives of many people, when we place that other person's interests first, when we act congruently with our true authentic core and we open ourselves to receiving, what we do is we create this benevolent context for success.”

“I don't think money is supposed to buy you happiness. I think money is supposed to give you choices.”

  • 067. Devin Miller | From IP to Philanthropy: Protecting Businesses, Paying It Forward

Ever wondered how doing more in your life can lead to giving more? Meet our guest, Devin Miller, a true testament to the idea that wearing many hats can make a big impact.

In this episode, Devin shares his inspiring journey, from obtaining multiple degrees in electrical engineering, Mandarin Chinese, and an MBA, to ultimately becoming an intellectual property attorney. An entrepreneur with a giving heart. Devin is on a mission to help startups and small businesses safeguard their brands and boost their profits through intellectual property.

What's even more remarkable? Devin is a dedicated philanthropist, determined to inspire future generations of givers, beginning with his own kids. Listen and learn how he does it all!

[00:00 - 12:28] Driven and Motivated to Achieve

    • Devin breaks down how he’s able to finish four degrees, start his own intellectual property law firm, and be involved in several startups
    • He talks about his great relationship with his dad and his influence as an entrepreneur
    • You don't necessarily need a formal education to be a successful entrepreneur, but he believes college can instill a good work ethic and determination

[12:29 - 25:55] Unlocking the Benefits of Intellectual Property for Entrepreneurs

    • Intellectual property can mean one, all three, or any of the following: patent, trademark, copyright
    • Businesses need to determine where their value lies in order to protect their investment
    • The earlier you start making decisions about protecting your intellectual property, the better
    • Big law firms generally have a good reputation for quality but come at a higher cost
    • Smaller law firms may offer more cost-effective methods but require more homework and due diligence to vet them
    • Startups should have a plan for when to start tackling legal matters, rather than pushing them down the “someday pile”

[25:56 - 32:04] Balancing Business and Giving Back

    • Devin shares his family’s commitment to helping those in need
    • It’s important to get kids involved at an early age and make them understand that they can create an impact on other people’s lives

    [32:05 - 40:38] Go Out and Give

    • Devin reflects on his favorite story of giving
    • Money doesn't always bring happiness, but there needs to be a threshold of money for consistent happiness

    Tweetable Quotes:

“Rather than just rely on the reputation of the big law firm, small law firms can give you every bit as good a quality at a more competitive price.”

“I always try and strive to break it down so that it makes sense to everybody, not just to the attorneys in the room.”

“This is somebody that's in need. We don't know what their life story is, but we can still be nice. So it's been a good experience that the kids have been able to actually go up, talk with them, give them gifts, see where they're at, see what going on with their lives.”

“I changed my eating habits. I gave myself big goals, which for me was doing competitions. I needed something big enough to really put the pressure on me to change the bad habits and, you know, it opened up all these other doors.”

"When you lead with giving and you show that you're not afraid to give if wherever God calls you to give, you can do it knowing that he will pour back abundantly on you.”

  • 065: Michael Unbroken | Transforming Pain to Purpose

In a society where we're often told to hide our pain, being honest and confronting our deepest pains can do more than just heal us personally – it can heal others too. It has a ripple effect that goes far beyond just ourselves and can have a lasting impact on the world.

This is what Michael Unbroken shares with us today. He was once a victim himself, but he'll tell us how he conquered his inner demons, turned his life around, and became an advocate for adult survivors who survived childhood trauma. Since 2016, he's been helping trauma survivors learn self-love and become the heroes of their own stories.

Come join us in this conversation and be empowered to embrace truth and healing.

    [00:00 - 08:28] From Homelessness to Success

    • Michael delves into his experience with poverty, addiction, and trauma from an early age
    • Despite having a high-powered career, he found himself at rock bottom, feeling miserable about himself
    • He made a decision to change his destiny

[08:29 - 22:00] Choosing the Path of Honesty

    • People who come from traumatic backgrounds are great at lying; not because they want to but because they have to
    • Facing the hard truths is scary but it is the first step in transformation
    • As long as you constantly show up, you will be able to step into a new identity and create long-term change
    • Recognize the patterns that prevent you from reaching your better self

    [22:01 - 32:08] Unlocking Trauma

    • Trauma can be hard to access and address, but awareness is key
    • We live in a trauma-forward society but there are misguided advice about it
    • People may need to acknowledge that something is in the way before they can move forward
    • The language used around trauma should be taken into consideration
    • It takes patience and practice to deal with trauma

    [32:09 - 44:21] Healing and Giving

    • As someone who overcame trauma, Michael is all about giving back
    • His mission is to end generational trauma

    Tweetable Quotes:

“I asked myself, what are you willing to do to have the life that you want to have? And the answer was no excuses, just results.”

"The thing about ‘stop lying’ means that you have to start telling the truth. You've never told the truth before. So you don't know how to tell the truth. And because you don't know how to tell the truth, it's terrifying because it's a new identity.”

"You don't necessarily need to pinpoint the exact thing, but you do need to uncover the emotional response that you have to the stressors in your life. When you can do that, now you're in this position where you can start to seek that real space of freedom."
