Previously, we talked about what our graduates are going to inherit from the generation of old: a broken world. Now for this episode, let's scale it back to just focus on our high school graduates. We usher our high school graduates onto the next phase of their lives, and it's usually done by showcasing pristine college campuses with a glittering promise: you just got to work hard and invest in your mind, and you will buy your way into the American Dream. What we casually gloss over is the fine print of a predatory system designed to trap them before their adult lives even begin. As of today, a higher education degree is no longer a golden ticket to a fulfilling career let alone a life with fewer sufferings; it’s a lifelong financial anchor, a modern form of economic bondage where our next generation of adults are forced to sign away their futures just to compete for entry-level survival. The sheer absurdity lies in a system that charges exorbitant, inflated prices for a basic societal need, only to let compounding interest transform a standard education into an inescapable, multi-decade debt sentence. No matter how hard these young adults work, no matter how many extra shifts they pull, the math is rigged against them, ensuring they spend their prime years paying off the privilege of merely trying to succeed. So when did we decide that crushing the ambition of our youth under the weight of institutional greed was an acceptable baseline for higher learning, and how can we honestly expect a generation to build a future when they are drowning in the debt of its foundation?
