S1E4 - Food Waste is Fucking Atrocious

Food waste is fucking atrocious. And I don’t mean to sound like a broken record (because that’s the title of this episode), but it really is. It’s deeply fucking strange that two issues can exist simultaneously in our world while being almost completely opposite in nature. On the one hand, we have a food-waste crisis in which millions, if not billions, of food items are recklessly thrown in the dump. On the other hand, we have a global hunger crisis...one that is affecting people who desperately need that very same food. And sure, we have food banks, charities, and donation drives that are trying their best, but those efforts can only go so far. They’re helping people with a problem that, in many cases, shouldn’t exist in the first place. The inspirational spark for this episode came when I remembered seeing some internet post depicting a dumpster overflowing with packages of food. But what really stuck with me was the accompanying message: the food had apparently been doused in bleach. They gave it a chemical baptism, seemingly believing that simply putting the food in a dumpster wasn’t enough to deter people from scavenging or dumpster diving, but going one step further, deliberately using a volatile chemical to make the food completely unusable. It’s a very crude image to behold. Granted, I understand the importance of food safety, and I recognize that there are legitimate reasons why businesses may need to prevent their discarded food from being consumed. But at the same time...there’s something profoundly cold about the image of perfectly edible food being intentionally destroyed when so many people around the world are struggling to fill their stomachs. It’s one of those cases where the cruel reality is that food waste and hunger can exist side by side, not because there isn’t enough food, but because the food we have is treated as something so easily disposable. We throw away what others desperately need, and then we pretend that the two problems have nothing to do with each other.
