S03 E37: The Power of the Powerless: Living in Truth Under Post-Totalitarianism
Season 3 | Episode 37
50m | Sep 14, 2026A greengrocer puts a sign in his window: “Workers of the world, unite!” He doesn’t believe it. Nobody believes it. Everybody knows nobody believes it. But the sign stays up. Why?
In this episode, we explore Havel’s essay on how totalitarian systems maintain themselves not through true believers but through ritual compliance. The greengrocer isn’t expressing conviction. He’s signalling that he will not make trouble.
Havel’s response: living in truth. Small refusals. The withdrawn signature. The sign that comes down. He argues that the system’s power comes from our participation, and therefore its weakness does too.
Written in 1978 Czechoslovakia. Eleven years later, the system collapsed.
