- Making the Paranormal Normal with Rebekah the Ghost Guide
What if ghosts aren’t quite what we’ve been taught to believe?
I recently had a very eye opening chat with Rebekah Carmichael, aka The Ghost Guide—a former ghost tour guide, paranormal investigator, medium, author and TikTok creator known for sharing her spiritual awakening and experiences chit-chatting with ghosts and other entities.
On this one, we took a guided tour through Rebekah’s recently published book, The Not-So-Scary Guide to Ghosts; How to Make the Paranormal Normal. In so doing, we explored ghosts, psychic abilities and mediumship, residual energy, spirit guides and the idea that understanding the paranormal can make it a whole lot less frightening. And, quite frankly — normal. We got into the fascinating conclusion highlighted in her book that some ghosts may be left behind fragments of a soul and what causes that to be the case, why spirits can become “stuck” in loops, the Stone Tape Theory, fundamentals when beginning to understand communication with the other side and how psychic senses may look and feel in your own life.

Today we're heading into the hills and hollers for a chaotic charcutic collection of Appalachian cryptids. I offer you some classics, some obscure, some who landed on the page of a newspaper and some that landed in the middle of nowhere for a little sip of blood. These beasts weren’t easy to classify. So…this island of misfit toys gets their very own show!
Today we’ll discuss:
🐑 Sheepsquatch — the mysterious white creature associated with West Virginia and some much older Appalachian stories.
👹 The Grafton Monster — a bizarre 1964 encounter that exploded into a full-blown monster hunt before eventually becoming one of the most fascinating examples of how folklore can evolve.
🐒 Devil Monkeys — mysterious, incredibly fast creatures described as resembling enormous kangaroos, with reports dating back decades.
🌱 The Vegetable Man — one of the strangest Appalachian high-strangeness cases, sitting somewhere between cryptid encounter, UFO story, and folklore.
🩸 The Bloodless Howler — a terrifying West Virginia chupacabra-like creature said to have the face and mane of a lion and the body of a timber wolf.

Appalachian folklore is crowded with things that aren’t what they appear to be.
In today’s episode, we begin our exploration of Beasts of the Backwoods with a peek into Appalachian shapeshifters—entities that wear faces, borrow voices, and can dangerously blur the line between the familiar and the not quite right. From Native legends like Spearfinger and the Raven Mocker, to European doppelgängers, changelings and Werewolves, to African trickster archetypes — a pattern begins to emerge across culture, place and time.
At the center of it all is a modern name for an ancient behavior: the Mimic.
Rather than attacking outright, this entity is said to patiently wait, diligently observe—biding it’s time learning voices, mannerisms, and relationships in order to imitate something it has never been. Human. It hides in plain sight. Presenting something familiar. And we will only know it by the sinking discomfort in our belly. And the things it couldn’t get right.
Whoever said imitation was the best form of flattery — obviously never considered the Mimic.
While this episode isn’t about jump scares or campfire tales—my hope is that listeners walk away feeling simultaneously creeped, yet intrigued enough to ask new questions. Why does the idea of imitation unsettle us so? Why does the concept of imposter show up across the world, in differing folklores and throughout time? Why are we equipped with the strangely specific intuitive Uncanny Valley Response, causing us to fear things that appear human, when they in fact, are not?

Death in Appalachia wasn’t distant, sanitized, or hidden away. It was intimate, communal, and deeply ritualized. Families washed and dressed their dead, kept vigil through the night, watched for omens, and followed tradition meant to protect both the living and the departed.
