Are you a high achiever who still feels like you have something to prove?

You may be working harder than ever, chasing promotions, money, recognition, awards, titles, or the next big win, yet still feel unfulfilled. In this episode of the Running Routes Podcast, Allen DeGraffenreid shares why so many driven people keep score using the wrong scoreboard, and what it takes to redefine success for the stage of life you are in now.

Allen shares his journey from high school athlete to Ohio State football player, NFL wide receiver, financial advisor, sales leader, and high achiever who repeatedly pursued the next level. His story is not simply about athletics or professional success. It is about identity, achievement, transition, and the danger of measuring your value solely by external wins.

After earning a scholarship at Ohio State, pursuing the NFL, and spending time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers, and in the World League, Allen faced a difficult question many former athletes, executives, entrepreneurs, and high performers eventually face: Who am I when the role, recognition, or career I built my identity around changes?

In this episode, you will learn:

    • Why high achievers often measure their lives using the wrong scoreboard.
    • How success metrics that worked earlier in life can become outdated.
    • Why achievement, awards, promotions, income, media attention, and recognition may not create lasting fulfillment.
    • How the transition after sports, career changes, divorce, loss, or other major life shifts can challenge your identity.
    • Why you cannot always outwork a younger version of yourself, and why a new strategy matters.
    • The difference between an outdated playbook and a system you can use to create forward momentum.
    • How chasing approval can take attention away from family, relationships, health, purpose, and legacy.
    • Why personal growth requires new tools, new systems, and a willingness to redefine how you measure success.
    • How to begin evaluating where you are today and identify the next route forward.

If you are feeling stuck in an old identity, using outdated measures of success, or chasing achievements that no longer fulfill you, this conversation is for you. The goal is not to deny your competitive drive. It is to direct it toward a life, system, and definition of success that fits who you are becoming.
