Employee ownership: part 2
Bella Lewis-Smith spent nineteen years building Salad Creative towards a trade sale. Then in a 2019 board meeting her co-director asked how much they really wanted it, and she realised they'd forgotten why they were scaling at all.
She joins Ed Ferris and Emily Monsell-Holden to explain what an employee ownership trust actually involves: why it has to be at least 51% trust-owned, why nobody buys in and no contracts change, and how it differs from EMI schemes and direct ownership.
She's candid about what they did right (and wring), telling her team over pizza on the beach in early COVID and learning that an intention without detail sends people straight to their worst fears. Four years on, she says she's enjoyed leading the business more in that time than in the twenty years before.
Bella is founder and managing director of Salad Creative.
Part two of two.
