• What Are You Looking For in A Young Tree Dog?

When you’re working with a young tree dog, it can be easy to focus on one question:

    Is he treeing yet?

But there’s a whole lot more I’m watching before I ever decide what I think that young dog might become.

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, we talk about some of the things I look for while a young tree dog is developing—hunt and desire, how they use their nose, whether they seem more track-minded or tree-minded, problem-solving ability, independence, confidence, and how they respond when things don’t go perfectly.

Treeing is exciting, but it doesn’t tell you the whole story.

How did the dog get there? What did he do when the track got tough? Can he correct his own mistakes? Is he making his own decisions, or depending on another dog or the handler to do everything for him?

And maybe most importantly, are we judging that young dog off one exciting moment—or are we paying attention to the patterns he continues to show us over time?

Especially for beginners, I think there’s a lot you can learn about a young tree dog long before everything completely comes together.

Hopefully this episode gives you a few more things to watch for the next time you’re in the woods with a young dog.

  • Practice What You Preach

    Practice what you preach.

Recently, Bawlin Out Kennels crossed 10,000 followers on Facebook. It’s a milestone I’m proud of, but it also made me think about the process it took to get there and how similar that process is to developing a young dog.

There were times when 10,000 followers felt a long way away. Times when growth was slow, things didn’t work, negativity showed up, and I questioned whether I was even headed in the right direction.

    Sound familiar?

Because we go through the exact same thing with our dogs.

You start with a young pup and have an idea of what you hope he’ll become. You put the work in, see little glimpses of progress, hit plateaus, have setbacks, and sometimes wonder if that dog is ever going to put it all together.

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, we talk about continuing to show up before the results are obvious, dealing with plateaus and outside opinions, knowing when to adjust without abandoning the process, and paying attention when those breakthroughs finally happen.

Because a breakthrough isn’t just something to celebrate; it’s something to study.

I spend a lot of time telling new handlers to be patient, trust the process, stop comparing their dogs to everybody else’s, and give that young dog time to develop.

Sometimes I have to remind myself to practice what I preach!

Thank you to everybody who has followed, listened, shared, commented, and supported Bawlin Out Kennels along the way. 10K is a milestone, but we’re nowhere close to finished.

  • Are You Helping That Young Dog Too Much?

Are you helping your young dog too much?

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, we talk about something that can be easy to overlook when training a young dog: sometimes the best thing you can do is step in—and sometimes the best thing you can do is get out of the way.

We get into the difference between teaching a dog and doing the work for him, why a little struggle can actually help build problem-solving ability, and how constantly directing a young dog can create one that starts waiting on you for every decision.

I also talk about knowing when help is actually needed, recognizing when your help may have become a crutch, and why different dogs need varying amounts of support depending on their confidence, maturity, and personality.

One question I think every handler should ask from time to time is:

Did the dog actually learn it… or did I just make it happen?

Especially with young tree dogs, the goal isn’t to manufacture every success. The goal is to help them understand the job, build confidence, and eventually be able to go do it without needing us to walk them through every step.

Hopefully this episode gives you something to think about the next time you’re working with a young dog.

What’s one situation where you’ve learned to step back and let your dog figure it out?

    36m - Aug 19, 2026
  • Do You Know What Motivates Your Dog?

Do you actually know what motivates your dog?

A lot of us have a certain way we like to train dogs, but one thing I've learned is that the same approach doesn't necessarily work the same way on every dog.

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, we're talking about learning the individual dog in front of you. Is that dog motivated by food? Praise? Play? Chase? Does pressure make him work harder, or does it cause him to shut down? And are the things we think are rewards actually rewarding to that particular dog?

We also get into rewarding effort versus only rewarding success, accidentally teaching behaviors we didn't intend to teach, knowing when a training method isn't working, and why sometimes the handler has to adjust before we blame the dog.

Because at the end of the day, dog training isn't only about teaching a dog what you want.

It's also about figuring out what makes that particular dog want to give it to you.

Hopefully this one gives new and experienced handlers alike something to think about the next time you're working with a young dog.

  • Female Recovery After Weaning Pups For Beginners

Have you ever wondered what happens after the puppies are weaned?

Most people spend all their time talking about raising the puppies—but very few talk about helping the mama dog recover. In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, we’re discussing the weaning process from both sides: preparing the puppies for independence while safely helping the female transition out of nursing.

    We’ll cover:
• Preparing a female before breeding
• Deworming before, during, and after pregnancy
• When to begin the weaning process
• My step-by-step approach to gradually separating mom and puppies
• Helping reduce the risk of mastitis and other health concerns
• Preparing puppies to confidently eat on their own
• Why recovery for the female is just as important as raising the litter

Whether you’re raising your first litter or your fifteenth, this episode is full of practical experience and a few things that are easy to overlook.

Something to think about… breeding doesn’t end when the puppies are born. A successful litter also means making sure the female has the opportunity to recover the right way.

  • Different Dogs... For Different People

If everyone wants a good rabbit dog... why don't we all want the same kind of rabbit dog?

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, I answer several listener-submitted questions about rabbit dogs and the different preferences hunters have. We discuss the kind of rabbit dog I personally enjoy running, why different styles of dogs fit different people, how I decide how many dogs to run at one time, and how I choose the people and dogs I hunt with.

One thing I've learned over the years is that there isn't one perfect rabbit dog for everyone. The best dog for you depends on your goals, your hunting style, your terrain, and what you enjoy most about being in the woods.

Whether you're just getting started or you've been hunting for years, I hope this episode gives you something to think about as you continue developing both your dogs and your own hunting style.

  • ALCBA Update: New Registration Opens August 1st

Where does the ALCBA stand today, and how can owners begin registering their American Leopard Curs moving forward?

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, I share an update on the American Leopard Cur Breeders Association and the new registration process launching August 1. We discuss how registration was handled in the past, how the new online system will work, and the different registration pathways available for current ALCBA dogs, litters, historical bloodlines, rebuild situations, and single registration.

I also talk about what to do if your dogs trace back to ALCBA stock but there is a break somewhere in the registration history. If that's your situation, don't assume it's too late. Every dog and pedigree is different, and we'd be happy to help determine the best registration pathway.

Beyond registration, I share the larger vision for the association: preserving the American Leopard Cur, improving recordkeeping, reconnecting owners and breeders, encouraging youth involvement, and eventually organizing hunts and gatherings that bring people together to enjoy the breed and the friendships that come with it.

    Registration opens August 1st

To access the online registration forms and application instructions, visit:

If you have questions or need help determining which registration pathway applies to your dog, feel free to reach out through Facebook Messenger or visit:

  • Your Puppy Started... Now What? Or Is It?

Your puppy finally opened up and ran with the dogs—but does that automatically mean your puppy is started?

The word “started” can mean several different things depending on who you ask. For one person, it may mean a puppy showed interest or joined a race. For another, it may mean the dog can recognize the track, contribute to moving the rabbit, work through a check, or even jump and circle its own rabbit.

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, we talk about what “started” can mean, what your puppy may have actually demonstrated, and where the work goes from there. We also discuss the difference between one exciting day and repeatable progress, why a started puppy should not suddenly be treated like a finished dog, and how continued experience can help you begin learning what kind of rabbit dog you truly have.

Your puppy starting is exciting—but it may be the beginning of the process rather than the end.

  • The Hardest Part of Dogs Is...

What's the hardest part of dogs?

Most people might say training, breeding, finding good dogs, or dealing with setbacks. But the more I've thought about it, the more I've started to wonder if the hardest part might be something else entirely.

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man Podcast, I explore the role patience plays in every stage of the journey—from puppies and development to training, breeding decisions, and long-term goals. We discuss the challenges of waiting for dogs to mature, waiting for results, and knowing when patience is helping versus when action is needed.

    Topics include:

    • Waiting on puppies to develop

    • Early starters vs late bloomers

    • Training and delayed results

    • Breeding decisions and long-term outcomes

    • The dangers of impatience

    • Knowing when to wait and when to act

    • Lessons dogs teach us about patience and life

Sometimes the work isn't the hardest part. Sometimes it's having the patience to let the work actually work.

  • What Makes Someone A Dog Man?

What actually makes someone a Dog Man?

Is it the number of dogs they've owned? The years they've spent hunting? The trophies on the shelf? Or is it something deeper than that?

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man Podcast, I explore a question that every dog person may answer a little differently. I share some of the things that, in my opinion, don't necessarily make someone a Dog Man, along with the traits and characteristics I believe often do.

    We discuss:

    • Why years alone don't always equal wisdom

    • The importance of honesty when evaluating dogs

    • Learning to read and understand individual dogs

    • Why responsibility matters

    • The role of mentorship and relationships

    • Studying the craft and remaining teachable

    • Separating dogs from ego

    • Leaving things better than you found them

This isn't meant to be the definitive answer. It's simply my perspective and an opportunity to start a conversation about what being a Dog Man really means.

What are you REALLY buying when you buy a puppy?

Most people would probably say they're buying a dog. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized a puppy represents much more than that.

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man Podcast, I explore the different things people are actually investing in when they bring home a new puppy. We talk about:

    • Buying potential versus certainty

    • Why genetics matter—but aren't guarantees

    • The relationship we hope to build with a dog

    • The dream most people have when selecting a puppy

    • How reality eventually meets expectations

    • The trap many new puppy owners fall into

    • Why responsibility matters more than most people realize

Are you REALLY prepared for a great dog?

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man Podcast, I explore a question that most dog handlers never stop to ask themselves: Are you actually prepared for what comes with a great dog?

    We discuss:

    • Why great dogs challenge training methods
    • How exceptional dogs expose weaknesses in handlers
    • The pressure and responsibility that come with talent
    • Why some great dogs can be frustrating
    • How one dog can change the standards of an entire kennel
    • The role ego plays when handling exceptional dogs
    • Why great dogs force people to grow

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man Podcast, I talk with Mr. Robert Paris for a conversation about dogs, pedigrees, mentorship, and what it really takes to improve quickly as a newer dog handler.

Even though Mr. Robert has only been involved with dogs for a short amount of time, he has already developed a deep interest in bloodlines, pedigrees, and understanding why dogs are the way they are through their ancestry.

    We talk about:

    • how he got started with dogs
    • the importance of mentorship
    • studying pedigrees and bloodlines
    • understanding inherited traits
    • learning intentionally as a beginner
    • and why growth comes from effort and curiosity

  • How To 10x Your Kennel

Most people think growing a better kennel means adding more dogs, more crosses, more pups, and more chaos.

    I don’t believe that.

In this episode of Thoughts of a Dog Man, we break down the idea from Dr. Benjamin Hardy’s book 10X Is Easier Than 2X and apply it directly to hunting dogs, kennel management, breeding programs, and producing better results.

Sometimes the biggest jump forward comes from cutting the bottom 80% and doubling down on what actually works.

    We talk about:

    • Why adding more dogs usually creates worse results
    • The difference between 2X thinking and 10X thinking
    • Why elite kennels are often smaller and more intentional
    • Dogs that earn feed vs dogs taking up space
    • Resetting a kennel before it crashes
    • Breeding with purpose instead of emotion
    • Focus, standards, and building a real program

This episode isn’t about tearing people down.

It’s about challenging dog men to think differently if they truly want exceptional results.

  • The Future of the Leopard Breed Starts Now! (3 of 3)

In Episode 1, I talked about how I ended up owning the A.L.C.B.A.

In Episode 2, I broke down the history, the split within the breed, and why it still matters today.

Now we talk about the future.

This episode is about where the Leopard breed stands right now, what I believe is hurting it, and what can still be done to help preserve what makes these dogs special.

I talk about the importance of people working together, putting pride aside, learning from experienced Leopard people who are still here, and keeping Leopards true to what they were meant to be.

Because at the end of the day…

    Leopards should be Leopards.

And if people truly care about the breed, there is still time to make a difference.

This isn’t about attacking anyone or living in the past.

It’s about asking an important question:

What are we going to do moving forward?

  • What Happened to the Leopard Breed? ALCBA Explained (2 of 3)

A lot of people know the letters A.L.C.B.A. — but not many know what it actually is, why it matters, or how much history is tied to it.

In this episode, I break down the American Leopard Cur Breeders Association, what a breed-specific registry can really do, and why Leopards have always been a unique breed with their own lane.

I also talk about the major shift that happened in 2008, how the breed ended up divided in different directions, and why many people still feel the effects of that today.

Most importantly, I talk about why there is still time to make a difference.

As long as knowledgeable people are still here, good dogs are still here, and people still care — there is still an opportunity to help get the Leopard breed back on a stronger path.

This is Part 2 of a 3-part series.

In the next episode, I’ll talk about where I believe things can go from here, what can be built, and what it will take moving forward.

  • How I Ended Up Owning the ALCBA: American Leopard Cur Breeders Association (1 of 3)

    This wasn’t something I planned…

In this episode, I talk about how I ended up taking over the A.L.C.B.A. (American Leopard Cur Breeders Association), how it all came together, and what this opportunity really means to me.

What started as conversations, building relationships, and mutual respect turned into something much bigger than I expected. This isn’t just about owning a registry or paperwork—this is about responsibility, preserving something meaningful, and doing right by the dogs and the people involved.

I share the story behind how it happened, the moment it became real, and why I don’t take this lightly. This is bigger than me, and it’s something I want to build the right way.

This episode is just the beginning. In the next ones, I’ll break down what the A.L.C.B.A. actually is and where I see it going moving forward.

If you’ve been following along, I appreciate you. If you’re new here, welcome—this is where things start to grow into something bigger.
