In Part 2 of his story, John Paul Jones reaches legendary status when he captains a sluggish converted merchant ship into British waters and squares off against HMS Serapis. We follow his deeds and misdeeds throughout the rest of the Revolution, his brief service in the Russian navy, his death and multiple burials, and examine his legacy 230 years later.

John Paul Jones, the Father of the American Navy, is celebrated for his tenacity at sea at a time when the young United States had no naval prowess to speak of. Yet as an individual, he was a flawed and complicated man, with direct ties to slavery and possibly murder as well. In this episode, we explore Jones' early life from his humble beginnings in Scotland, his move to America, and his first raid of the British Isles in command of the Ranger.
