2nd Sunday after Easter Reflection: He Knows His Own

On Good Shepherd Sunday — the Second Sunday after Easter — the Church sings of a God whose goodness fills the earth, and then places before us the most intimate portrait of Christ in all the Gospels: the Shepherd who knows His sheep by name, and who lays down His life for them freely. Drawing on Saint Peter's great meditation on the wounds that heal and the sheep who were straying, and on Saint Ambrose of Milan's insight that the Good Shepherd does not send us out naively but with full knowledge of the wolves, this reflection explores what it means to be known and called by name — and to recognize the Shepherd's voice in the breaking of the bread.
